Chester Arranging Assignment

Day One 1. Have section leaders pass out handouts. 2. Ask about what kind of song Chester Variations is. (Theme and Variations) 3. Who can define composition? (original work of music) 4. Who can define arrangement? (taking an already composed melody and changing it in some way) What kind of things can we change to make a melody an arrangement? (i.e. the rhythm, the notes) and say well be doing a rhythmic arrangement. 5. Explain worksheet: a. 8 bars of Chester melody included play it! b. For each quarter, half, and whole, we are going to replace the rhythm with one of our rhythmic excerpts. c. Do the first four bars as a class. Have students volunteer options for the first measure, then have different students come up to rewrite each rhythmic value with a new rhythmic excerpt. Make sure they understand how to choose each rhythmic excerpt and maintain the original notes. d. Homework assignment! Complete it tonight so we can bring them in tomorrow and play through some of them. 6. At the concert, this project will be explained to the audience. The whole band will play the first eight measures of the melody. Then two or three student arrangements will be picked by the directors to play at the concert as a whole band. Then well perform! Day Two 1. Begin by asking students to have their worksheets in front of them. 2. Take five or six volunteers to perform their arrangements. 3. Have students pass the worksheets to the outside of the ensemble to be picked up. 4. Continue with Chester Variations rehearsal.
