Scholarships for African-Americans Studying STEM


By Jason Koebler | December 29, 2011 Like Latinos and women, African-Americans are underrepresented in STEM fields. If you're interested in studying for a STEM degree in college, there are several organizations out there willing to help you out financially. Here are some of them: Microsoft The software giant's "Blacks at Microsoft" scholarships are awarded to high school seniors interested in studying engineering, computer science, computer information systems, or business. The $5,000 scholarships are renewable each year. Organization of Black Aerospace Professionals OBAP offers a variety of scholarships to black students interested in becoming pilots or entering the aerospace field. Oracle Oracle offers $10,000 scholarships to those attending historically black colleges and universities (and a variety of other universities) who are studying computer science, engineering, software development, or business. Winners will also participate in an eight-week paid internship at Oracle. Gateway to Leadership Program For students at HBCUs who are interested in finance, business, or economics, the Gateway to Leadership Program will earn paid internships at a variety of banking firms such as Legg Mason, Prudential Investments, and ING Investments. Gates Millennium Scholars Program Each year, 1,000 minority students interested in studying computer science, engineering, mathematics, science, and several other non-STEM majors earn good-through-graduation full-ride scholarships. National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering Each year, NACME awards $4 million to minority students who are studying engineering. More information about application requirements and deadlines will be available in the spring. National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates NAMEPA awards scholarships to students studying engineering who are transferring from community colleges to four-year institutions. National Association of Black Geologists and Geophysicists

NABGG awards scholarships to four full-time undergraduate students studying geoscience. Applicants must have a minimum GPA of 2.5 and applications are due April 30. National Society of Black Physicists NSBP awards three scholarships to sophomore and juniors studying physics. Act quickly: Scholarship applications are due by January 13. National Society of Black Engineers NSBE, in partnership with companies such as Caterpillar, BP, ExxonMobil, and General Mills, offers dozens of scholarships worth a total of several million dollars annually to students studying engineering. Update: Google Google, with the United Negro College Fund, offers several $10,000 scholarships to students studying computer engineering, computer science, or software engineering. 12 Scholarships for Hispanic Students Interested in STEM


December 15, 2011 Like women, Hispanic people are severely underrepresented in STEM fields. Latinos make up 16 percent of America's population, but just 6.2 percent of the engineering workforce. Luckily, there are a host of organizations trying to close this gap by helping Hispanic students who are interested in STEM get through college. For a list of more organizations supporting Hispanics in STEM, check out U.S. News partner STEMConnector. Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Foundation The Society of Hispanic Professional Engineers Foundation awards more than $500,000 in scholarships to Latino students who want to study engineering. Prizes range from $1,000-$5,000. This year, the application deadline was April 1. ASPIRA Association Accenture offers multiyear internships and $3,000 scholarships for college sophomores studying business, engineering, computer science, information systems, or math. They are awarded in conjunction with the ASPIRA Association. Hispanic Scholarship Fund The Hispanic Scholarship Fund offers a host of scholarships for students studying all fields.

The Gates Millennium Scholars Program Each year, 1,000 minority students studying STEM (or library science or education) will get good-throughgraduation scholarships to use at any university. The deadline is January 11. Hispanic Association of Colleges & Universities HACU awards a variety of scholarships for students who demonstrate financial need. Applications will open in the spring. Hispanic College Fund The Hispanic College Fund and Google offer $10,000 scholarships and an all-expenses paid trip to Google Headquarters in California. Applicants must have a 3.0 GPA, demonstrate financial need, and be studying computer science or computer engineering. Hispanic Dental Association The Hispanic Dental Association has a variety of scholarships ranging from $1,000-$10,000 for students interested in studying dentistry. League of United Latin American Citizens The League of United Latin American Citizens, in conjunction with General Electric, awards two Hispanic students studying business or engineering with $5,000 scholarships. National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering More than 15 percent of minority engineering grads since 1974 have received a scholarship from NACME. More information about deadlines and requirements should be up sometime in the spring. National Association of Multicultural Engineering Program Advocates NAMEPA awards $1,000 scholarships to freshmen entering an engineering program and students transferring from a community college to a four-year engineering program. National Alliance for Hispanic Health The National Alliance for Hispanic Health awards scholarships to 35 students with a declared STEM major. National Association of Hispanic Nurses More information about NAHN's scholarship programs will be available early next year. This year, eight students interested in nursing won $5,000, and five students won $1,000.

9 College Scholarships for Women in STEM


December 13, 2011 Though women make up just more than half of the population, only 13 percent of engineers are women. They're similarly underrepresented in other science, technology, engineering, and math professions, but there are several

organizations encouraging young women to study STEM in college. These groups even offer scholarships for women studying for a STEM undergraduate degree. Society of Women Engineers Last year, the SWE awarded 188 scholarships to women who planned to pursue a career in engineering, engineering technology, and computer science. Awards range from $1,000 to $20,000 each. The application deadline for freshmen is May 15, for sophomores through grad students it is February 15. The Center for Women in Technology Scholarships are available for women interested in studying computer science, information systems, business technology administration, computer engineering, mechanical engineering, or other engineering field at the University of Maryland Baltimore County. Many of the awards include full tuition and mandatory fees. Applications are due by January 15. Girl Scouts of America Girl Scouts of America offers a variety of scholarships, many of them for students interested in STEM. American Agri-Women This organization offers $1,000 scholarships for women who are interested in agriculture and are related to someone employed in the field. Applications are due June 1. Alice T. Schafer Mathematics Prize This prize is awarded by the Association for Women in Mathematics to an undergraduate student who has demonstrated excellence in math courses. In order to be eligible, the student has to be nominated by October 1. Vanguard Women in Information Technology This scholarship is open to college juniors and seniors who are studying computer science, computer engineering, Web design, or another IT field. Each scholarship is worth $10,000. Applications will open in August 2012. Google Anita Borg Memorial Scholarship Anita Borg founded the Institute for Women and Technology--applicants must be entering their senior year or be a grad student studying computer science or computer engineering, and have at least a 3.5 GPA. Scholarships are for $10,000 and applications are due by February 6. Sony Online Entertainment Sony awards one $10,000 scholarship and internship opportunity each year as part of its G.I.R.L. (Gamers in Real Life) program. Applicants must be interested in becoming a video game designer. This year, the deadline was April 6, the 2012 deadline has not been announced. Association for Women in Aviation Maintenance This organization has many scholarships available to women interested in aviation.
