Short View: The Concept of Mediation LONG KimKhorn, 61283, PUC, MA.

IRs &Diplomacy July 9, 2013 Mediation is a kind of solving-problem technique without going to the final court of appeal. It is called a third-party-conflict solution in which the third party that doesnt involve in the conflict with any parties provide the Good Office for the conflict parties to discuss face-to-face to find solution. There are types of mediations. It can be NGOs or INGOs or IOs like UN that play as mediator just providing financial support, mechanism, procedure and venue for the conflict to meet and address conflict. Sometime, mediator was not NGOs/ INGOs/ IOs but a sovereign state that considered regionally or internationally that have no special interest or underinfluence of any parties involving in the conflict as the venue for the talk like Austria, Norway, France etc. This form of diplomacy not used only by small state group but was used in solving regional conflict as well as in the international affair. To comply with mediation diplomacy can keep relationship friendly without big problem or avoid the big problem in each other. For example, they mediate with a state in their group when they saw possibility of threatening to the regional security and peace or when a member of their alliance make trouble to others or when they loose the membership of their association. So far, most regional conflict and international issues solved effectively with mediation diplomacy especially from a position of super-power like US and China to their satellite/ allies state. For example, South China Sea dispute with the support of US to talk with China and mediate with small state in the conflict like Philippines, Vietnam and Malaysia. It has been making conflict under the control and solve peacefully with military violation or war. -END-
