Naturalistic Observation

Since your focus is of an entire class of students, you and your partner should observe independently of each other and compare note afterwards. You are to tally the behaviors you observe during the class. You may also write comments to help you remember what you are seeing (for the purposes of discussion). The population: _______________________________________________________________________ The setting: __________________________________________________________________________ Relevant Behaviors: Inappropriate communication: o Verbal and non-verbal gestures between two or more students that does not pertain to the subject matter at hand. Daydreaming: o Behaviors such as head bobbing o Extended glances (less than five seconds) a person or object not pertaining to the task at hand o Watching (more than five seconds) a person or object not pertaining to the task at hand o Placing ones head on the desk with no intention to actively participate in the current activity. Other Disruptive Behavior: o Violation of another students personal space by touching, hitting, poking, kicking, grabbing, throwing or snapping objects o Unauthorized movement out of ones desk o Making an unwarranted or inappropriate comment designed to disrupt the class. o Interrupting the teacher.
