    Amides can undergo hydrolysis to form carboxylic acids and carboxylate ions. They can also undergo dehydration to form nitriles. Non-substituted amides can undergo Hofmann degradation using bromine and sodium hydroxide to form primary amines with one less carbon. Amides can be reduced to primary amines using lithium tetrahydridoaluminate. Amides are unique among acid derivatives in that they are not reduced to alcohols.
