All Questions carry equal marks
?????

1. (a) Distinguish between positive and negative edge dislocations with the help of
neat sketches. [8]
(b) Explain the term bond energy. What is the range of bond energy in primary
and secondary bonds. [4]
(c) Calculate the number of atoms per unit area of (111), (110) and (100) planes
of BCC crystal. The answer may be derived in terms of lattice parameter ‘a’.

3. (a) Distinguish between

i. Terminal phase
ii. intermediate phase. [5]
(b) Draw a binary phase diagram where in two components are completely solu-
ble in liquid state but only partly soluble in solid state. Label the important
points; lines and phases in it. Explain the solifidication process of a hypoeu-
tectic alloy. [15]

4. (a) What are the advantages of alloy steels over plain carbon steels? [5]
(b) Explain the importance of Manganese as alloying element in steel. How does
it influence the I-T diagram. Give a typical composition of a steel which has
excellent wear resistance. [15]
