AUDIO-LINGUAL METHOD Reviewing the Principles 1.

Primary Goal: For students to be able to use the language communicatively, Overlearn the target language, and Overcome old habits of their native language 2. Teachers Role: Authority; Students Role: Follower 3. Some characteristics of the T-L Process: Imitation and repeating dialogs to learn new vocabulary and structural patterns Students successful are positively reinforced Explicit grammar rules are not provided Oral work: basis for reading and writing work Culture is contextualized in the dialogs 4. Nature of S-T interaction: Mostly teacher-student and initiated by the teacher There are student-student interaction during chain drills and role taking 5. Way of dealing with the students feelings: No principles related to this area 6. View on Language and Culture: Every language has its own unique system made up of different levels (phonological, morphological, and syntactic). Culture consists of everyday behavior and lifestyle of the target language speakers. 7. Area/Skills emphasized: Vocabulary is kept to a minimum while the students are mastering the sound system and grammatical pattern. The natural order of skills is adhered to: listening, speaking, reading, writing. 8. Role of students native language: Thought to interfere with the target language 9. Evaluation: each question would focus on only one point in the language at a time 10. Teachers response to errors: should be avoided through teachers awareness of students weaknesses Techniques: Dialog Memorization, Backward build-up (expansion) drill, Repetition drill, Chain drill, Single-slot substitution drill, Multiple-slot substitution drill, Transformation drill, Question-and answer drill, Use of minimal pairs, Complete the dialog, Grammar game.
