This class is an introduction to basic algebra. It includes translating written statements into algebraic expressions, linear equations, linear inequalities, graphing, integer exponents, and polynomials. Also includes factoring, literal equations, square roots, quadratic equations, systems of equations, and optional topics.

Textbook: Algebra 1. Holt McDougall, Common Core Edition 2012. Quarter 1 Topics Quarter 2 Topics Real number system and modeling Building functions and reasoning with equations Quarter 3 Topics Quarter 4 Topics Linear and exponential functions Quadratic functions and equations Required Tools for Success Classroom Procedures 1) Three ring binder with paper 1) Be Respectful 2) Calculator (scientific or graphing) 3) Pencils and erasers 2) Be Responsible 4) Graphing paper 3) Be Positive 5) At least one dry erase marker Discipline will be handled according to Catalina Magnet High School and TUSD policies. The use of electronics, including cell phones, are not permitted inside classrooms during school hours. All devices should be turned off or silenced when entering the classroom. Calculators are the only exception. Grading Policy Students earn their grade by completing weekly assignments in a timely manner and performing their best on quizzes and tests.

Grade break-down: Homework 8% Class Assignments 8% Unit Quizzes 24% Unit Exams 40% Final Exam 20% Class work All class work assignments are due the same day unless otherwise stated. Full credit is given full effort shown during class and on the assignment. Homework The point isnt to earn points -- the point is to gain experience! Homework assignments are due within 24 hours unless otherwise stated. Late assignments will receive a maximum of 6 points by default unless the assignment is turned in within 1 week and with a tardy coupon is attached. Tests and Quizzes We will have quizzes every week or two and tests about once a month. Students are allowed to use notes during quizzes but not during tests. Students who complete their daily assignments, and seek tutoring when needed, will have no problem passing quizzes and tests. Retakes You may retake any test if you are not happy with your grade. In order to retake a test, you must make full corrections to your old test during tutoring and turn in at least 2 missing homework assignments. The highest grade you may earn on a retake is a 75%. You may not retake quizzes. Tutoring My tutoring hours will be posted weekly but I am usually available for tutoring until 3:40 on Monday and Thursday.
