Football games and French toast

Irene Schrijver, an exchange student
from Netherlands

When I got back from my exchange year

in the US, I always got the question: how
was it. Its hard to answer that particular
question, the year was amazing but so many
things happened that that word only is not
the right description. My year in the USA was
so much more than just amazing. Its almost
impossible to tell people how my exchange
year was because the US is so different than the Netherlands and
because they cant imagine it, they cannot imagine what it was like.
My family and friends dont have a clue of the place I called home
for almost a year.
How can I explain the cheering and school spirit at football
games, how can I explain the amazing hiking trails I did with friends
and the camping beneath big trees in the redwoods, the swimming in
rivers, driving early in the morning to Dutch bros to get a skim milk
latte with an extra shot, please, driving for like an hour in the woods
to play beer pong on some illegal party, going out for breakfast to eat
some thick French toast, all those classes like theater, driving for 4
hours (one way) to go to Seattle for one day, the movies, the malls
that are open 24/7, my tennis matches, high school prom and above
all, all the wonderful friends I made Its almost not possible.
But not everything from the US is better than the Netherlands,
I was simply shocked when I found out that they still use checks, we
do all our payments on the internet and there was only 1 train line
on the whole west coast. The biggest differences though where not
