Kom Tong Hall, situated on Castle Road of the Mid-Levels Hong Kong Island and erected in 1914, has been refurbished and converted into Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum. This Edwardian, classical style three-storey Kom Tong Hall, which was originally owned by Mr Ho Kom-tong, the younger brother of Eurasian tycoon Sir Robert Ho Tung, is majestic and magnificent, and is amongst the very few survivors in Hong Kong dating back to the early 20th Century. In 2004, the Hong Kong SAR Government acquired this historic builidng and converted it into Dr Sun Yat-sen Museum to highlight Dr Sun's intimate connections with Hong Kong where he attended schools and nurtured his revolutionary ideas. This paper outlines the process whereby the structural engineer together with the architect and the contractor helped to refurbish the building for adaptive reuse as a museum, while preserving its original splendour. A mandate of minimal intervention was adopted by a strong multidisciplinary team which has applied its diverse knowledge and skills to meet the stringent and yet conflicting requirements.
