Basic Computer Terminology

Hardware --- the physical parts of the computer


CPU

The CPU (Central Processing Unit) is the key component of a computer system, which contains the circuitry necessary to interpret and execute program instructions. It is often called the brains of the computer.

Disk Drive A peripheral device that reads and/or writes information on a disk. Hard Drive A device (usually within the computer case) that reads and writes information, including the operating system, program files, and data files Keyboard A peripheral device used to input data by pressing keys Modem/Router an electronic device that makes possible the transmission of data to or from a computer via telephone or other communication lines. Monitor A device used to display information visually; the computer screen Mouse A peripheral device used to point to, select, and move items on a monitor. Single Click This action is used to highlight an item or generate a command to the computer. Double Click To open an item, press and release the left mouse button twice in quick succession. Drag and Drop To move icons or folders on your screen, place the pointer over the object, press and hold down the left button. Move the object by dragging the mouse to where you want to place the object and then release (drop) the button. Right Click A right click of the mouse will provide a drop down menu of frequently used commands for that item.

Printer A peripheral device that converts output from a computer into a printed image
