Welcome! My name is Ms. Barrett and I am eager to have you in my Social Studies classroom. I promise to prepare exciting lessons and provide challenging experiences. As a student, I expect you to be active in classroom discussion and willing to learn new things. I believe each of you has the potential to be successful in this class! Dont forget to have fun on the way... In our Social Studies classroom, we learn about the earth and its people. Specifically, we will use geographic tools to explore the worlds people, places, and environments. Through activities, research, and investigations, each of you will learn more about the importance of geography and its importance to society. This year will be filled with many hands-on activities/projects! Listed below are just some of the many topics that will be discussed throughout the year: o Population o Natural Resources o Regions o Navigation o GPS Systems o Weather and Climate o Energy o Culture o Trade o Government Class Materials o Pens/Pencils o Highlighter o Paper o Three Ring Binder (Section for Social Studies

Grading Policy o Homework will be given each day (Mon-Thurs) beginning on Monday, September 9th. o Homework should be turned in at the beginning of the class period. Late homework will receive a 5% deduction. o Tests will be conducted after each major section. Students will receive prior notice (at least 5 days) about the test date/details. o Review sessions are held one day prior to the test. Students are expected to study the material before this date. o Students are expected to take notes and participate during the class session. Students are responsible for their notes. o Quizzes will be announced at least one day before the date. In some cases, students will be given notice of a quiz the night before the actual date. o Research projects and papers are forthcoming and information will be sent home at a later date. Grading Scale o Tests: 25 % o Projects: 25% o Participation: 15% o Homework: 15% o Quizzes: 20% Classroom Expectations o Respect Others/Respect Self/Respect Property o Be seated and with all materials when class begins. o Complete all assignments on time. o Ask questions if you are unsure of the material.
