Key Skills Interpret data on the health status of Australias children

Learning Tasks: 1. As a class we will read through & discuss the powerpoint presentation 100 kids, which looks at some interesting statistics about Australias children. 2. Using the 100 kids presentation as a stimulus, brainstorm with the person next to you the following points: How healthy do you think Australias children are? Explain. What do you think are the biggest health issues facing Australias children? Justify your response. What do you think are the top 3 leading causes of hospitalisation amongst children? Justify your response. What do you think are the top 3 causes of mortality amongst children? Justify your response.

Record these points in your workbooks under the heading the health of Australias children. Once you have done this we will discuss the various responses as a class. 3. As a class read & discuss pages 233-244 of the textbook, which outlines the health of Australias children. As you get to activities 8.1, 8.2 & 8.5 you will be given time to complete these in your workbooks, either by yourself or with a partner. Results from each activity will be discussed as a class.

4. When you go home tonight fill out the Royal Childrens Hospital Home Safety Checklist http://www.rch.org.au/uploadedFiles/Main/Content/safetycentre/1 20544%20Home%20Safety%20Checklist%20A4.pdf to assess how safe your house would be for a child to live in. Once you have done this, summarise your findings in a short paragraph in your workbook, discussing whether or not your house would be safe enough for a child to live in. If you dont think your house is safe enough, what actions would you need to take to improve how safe it is? You will be required to share your results with the class next lesson. 5. In groups of 2-3 complete the Health Concerns of Children Awareness poster task on the next page. You will have approximately one lesson to work on this and will be required to share your poster with the class.
