A: Material Database
Material Database Location: Program Files -> mfsi -> nagsim2d -> Support -> nagsimmatl.db The material database in NAGSIM.2D has been updated. A number of materials including some tools steels, carbides, nonferrous materials and ferrous materials have been added. In addition, materials properties in metric units are included Unit Systems: English: Length: inch Modulus of Elasticity: psi ( lb/in2) Poissons ratio: Dimensionless Yield stress: psi Strain Hardening Coeff: K psi Strain Hardening Exponent, n: Dimensionless Metric: Length: mm Modulus of Elasticity: N/mm2 (mpa) Poissons ratio: Dimensionless Yield stress: N/mm2 Strain Hardening Coeff: K N/mm2 Strain Hardening Exponent, n: Dimensionless Materials: English Units Carbon and Alloy Steels AISI standard: 1006A 1008A 1010A 1006Amm 1008Amm 1010Amm (A for annealed, mm for metric units) Metric Units

B: Units of Results Displayed

Results are based on following unit systems: Unit Systems: English: Length: inch Modulus of Elasticity: psi ( lb/in2) Poissons ratio: Dimensionless Yield stress: psi Strain Hardening Coeff: K psi Strain Hardening Exponent, n: Dimensionless Metric: Length: mm Modulus of Elasticity: N/mm2 (mpa) Poissons ratio: Dimensionless Yield stress: N/mm2 Strain Hardening Coeff: K N/mm2 Strain Hardening Exponent, n: Dimensionless

Results:
Note: 3

Results on stresses and loads are shown after dividing by 1000. So stresses are shown in ksi in English Units and KN/mm2 in Metric Units. The loads are shown in klb ( 1000 lb) in English Units and KN ( 1000 Newton) in Metric units.

English Unit System Displayed Stresses: S11, S22, S33, S23, S_EFF, SP1, SP2 Displayed Strains: E11,E22,E33,E23, E_EFF, EP1, EP2 Displayed Strain Rates: ER11,ER22,ER23, ER_EFF, ERP1, ERP2 Load Stroke Curve Damage Factor per sec Dimensionless (dl/l) ksi ( 1000 psi)

Metric Unit System

KN/mm2 ( 1000 N/mm2)

Dimensionless (dl/l)

per sec. KN mm ( 1000 N mm) Dimensionless

klb inch ( 1000 lb inch) Dimensionless

Note: Critical Values ( Part/Tool may crack) 1. Part: Effective strain exceeding 2.5 for Carbon Steels 2. Part: Tensile Damage Factor exceeding .55 for Carbon Steels 3. Tool: E_EFF, EP1 exceeding yield strength of tool material (Tensile yield strength of carbides is much less ( or less) than their compressive yield strength. Published Yield Strength of Tool Steel and Carbides H13_RC48 O1_RC59 M2_RC60 M4_RC63 CarbideND20 262.8 ksi ( 1812 N/mm2) 350.0 ksi ( 2415 N/mm2) 336.0 ksi ( 2317 N /mm2) 485.0 ksi ( 3350 N/mm2) 391.0 ksi ( 2694 N/mm2) Compressive ( Tensile YS = .448 * Comp. YS)

CarbideND25 CarbideK3109

355.0 ksi ( 2447 N/mm2) Compressive (Tensile YS = .53 * Comp. YS) 560.0 ksi ( 3859 N/mm2) Compressive (Tensile YS = .357 * Comp. YS)

Theoretically tool life (due to fatigue failure) is infinite if the maximum cyclic stresses is less than half the yield stress.

C: Settings in NAGSIM.2D
Default Settings: English Units Setting Dialog Box Geometric Error: Allowed Penetration: Allowed Air Gap: .000001 (inch) .005 ( inch) .020 ( inch) .000026 ( mm) .125 ( mm) .5 ( mm) Metric Units

Process Simulation Dialog Box Time Step .010 ( sec / inc) With punch speed of 1.0 inch /sec .01 ( sec / inc) With punch speed of 25 mm / sec

Notes: Geometric error should not be set less than .000026 mm for Metric units and .000001 for English Units otherwise you would get repeated remeshes. Time step should not be too large otherwise the part moves into the tool during the increment causing remesh or crash.
