COURSE DESCRIPTION AND LEARNING STANDARDS Students will demonstrate skills in the writing process, being able to write for different audiences and purposes, using Standard English grammar and mechanics. Students will employ a variety of strategies and skills to comprehend, interpret, analyze and evaluate a variety of materials. Students will read, analyze, interpret and respond to significant works of literature by using knowledge of purpose, structures and elements of writing. Students will recognize, use and analyze the qualities of effective oral communication including effectively through speaking to different groups and for different purposes and listening to understand, analyze and evaluate information received. Students will apply their knowledge of word origins and analysis, to determine the meaning of new words encountered in reading and listening and use those words accurately in speaking and writing. Students will access and use information from a variety of sources to extend knowledge through exploration, gathering, preparation and presentation of new information. TEACHING METHODS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED The teacher will facilitate students to learn to the best of their ability and present the class material in a variety of ways. At times students will be asked to work individually or in groups depending on the task in order to build on their reading, writing, comprehension, vocabulary and comprehension skills. STUDENTS MUST COME PREPARED FOR ALL CLASSES AND BE ACTIVELY INVOLVED. Each student requires the following materials for English Classes: 2 ring white binder / A4 lined paper/ clear pocket book folders(portfolio) Highlighters, colored pencils post-it pads permanent marker(any color) colors (of any kind)(colored A4paper for graphic organizer brainstorming) pencil, blue pen, red pen, green pen, ruler, eraser and sharpener

ASSESSMENT AND GRADING Students will be graded on the following areas from the Achieve Standards Curriculum: READING AND LITERATURE/ WRITING AND RESEARCH/ SPEAKING AND LISTENING /VIEWING AND PRESENTING/ LANGUAGE DEVELOPMENT STUDENT EXPECTATIONS ALL STUDENTS MUST ABIDE BY THE Essential Agreement school code of conduct document. STANDARD PROCEDURES WILL BE FOLLOWED IF INFRACTIONS OCCUR. Students must: Be on time Check WEEBLY when absent and get printable information Have A4 lined paper and 2 ring binder to keep all writing drafts and typed papers Conduct themselves in a mature, polite manner and respect the school essential agreement document linked to IB learner profile

Assignments must be handed in on the due date otherwise there are consequences. It is important that the students work is written in her own words and not plagiarized. Such work will be disregarded and the Code of Conducts procedures will be applied in those cases. HOMEWORK: Weekly vocabulary lists that students will be expected to learn the meaning of and spell correctly. THE SPELLING/MEANING TEST IS ALWAYS ON THE FIRST DAY OF ENGLISH OF EVERY WEEK Other worksheets or tasks assigned at the time listed on WEEBLY must be returned the day after absence or there will be consequences.
