Side Effects/Adverse Effects Hypersensitivity Cross-sensitivity with thiazides and sulfonamides may occur. Pre-existing electrolyte imbalance, hepatic coma or anuria.

Diuretics

Inhibits there absorption of sodium and chloride from the loop of henle and distal renal tubule. Increase renal excretion of water, sodium, chloride, magnesium, hydrogen and calcium. Diereses and subsequent mobilization of excess fluid

Assess fluid status during therapy. Monitor daily weight, intake and output ratio. Monitor blood pressure and pulse before and during administration. Assess for allergy to sulfonamides.

Availability 20-80 mg PO once daily;

may be increased by 20-40 mg q6-8hr; not to exceed 600 mg/day

Alternative: 20-40 mg IV
once; may be increased by 20 mg q2hr; individual dose not to exceed 200 mg
