Abstract : The deepwater area wit h over 300 meters in water dept h in t he nort hern co ntinental margin of Sout h China Sea experienced
p re2rift p hase , rift p hase ,po st2rift p hase and Neotectonic p hase. In t his area , a bump2sag pattern was formed. The Paleogene system
wit h 36 kilometers in t hickness was depo sited in t he sags during t he rift p hase. The t hickness of Lower2Middle Miocene depo sited
during po st2rift p hase was less t han 2000 meters. The late Miocene2Quaternary system wit h a t remendous t hickness was fo rmed and
also refo rmed in east part during Neotectonic p hase. The potential hydrocarbo n sags in deepwater area are t he faulted dep ressio ns
fo rmed in t he rift p hase. The p roven source rocks are t he early Oligocene mid2deep lacust rine mudsto ne , t ransitional mudstone ,ma2
rine mudstone and coal system. The p robable source rock is t he Eocene mid2deep lacust rine mudsto ne , and t he po ssible one is t he up2
per Oligocene and Miocene marine mudsto ne. There are at least t hree reservoir cases in deepwater , including Oligocene t ransitional
sandstones , Neogene2Quaternary marine deepwater sandsto ne and reef , and Eocene terrest rial sandsto ne. The seal rocks are devel2
oped widely , and t he Neocene marine mudstone is t he regional seal. There are a lot of t rap s wit h t he main styles of draping anticline ,
fault t rap and deepwater fan. The oil2gas migration style varies wit h time and space and is co nt rolled by t he Neotecto nic fault activi2
ties. The parallel migration dominates in t he deepwater of Qiongdo ngnan Basin and in t he early p hase of Baiyun Dep ression , and t he
vertical migration do minates in t he late p hase of Baiyun Dep ressio n. The deepwater play and t rap s contain bulge , seco ndary bulge in
sag , fault zone and deepwater fan. Explo ration activity should first aim at t he st ruct ural t rap s in t he sag and in t he fo rward direction
of st ruct ure aro und t he sag and t hen gradually develop toward t he non2st ruct ural t rap .
