2: WelcomeInfant Activity Triangle Classroom Shelby Nickel This activity targeted the infants of the classroom, with the developmental objective of exploring a variety of textures while increasing physical strength in the neck and chest. For this activity, fabric letters corresponding to the first letter of each childs name were taped to the mat by the climber. The infants were able to use their senses to explore the letters. Each letter was a different texture so that the children had the opportunity to discover and experiment with a variety of textures. Each infant participated in this activity and seemed to really enjoy the different textures of each letter. Everett (8 months) demonstrated Indiana foundation SC.1.73use their five senses to learn about the environmentby using his senses of touch and sight to explore the letters. While engaging in this activity, he used his hand to feel each letter for approximately ten seconds before moving on to the next, showing much interest in the textures of each one.

Tudor (7 months) completed foundation P.2.2 demonstrates movement with strength (e.g., moves when on stomach or back; raises head and chest when on tummy; moves arms and legs when on back or tummy)when he explored the letters while on his stomach. He was able to lift his head and chest off the floor to look at and feel the letters, also completing the developmental objective of increasing physical strength in the neck and chest.

Even though Anika (18 months) is not an infant, she also engaged in this infant activity, showing that infants were not the only children interested in the participating. She also completed SC.1.73 primarily by using her sense of touch when she felt each letter on the floor. She was actively engaged in this activity for approximately ten minutes. Because she enjoyed the letters so much, it was evident that this activity could be adapted for older children in addition to infants.
