No. 1.1 Activity Title: Regular Health Examinations Learning Target: Explain the importance of having a regular Health Examination. Reference: Enjoy Life with P.E. and Health IV Author: Grace Estela C. Mateo, Ph.D. Type of Activity: Concept Notes Health can be very much affected by the social situations that people experience, the environment around them, and their individual personalities. In particular, home, school, and work circumstances have a strong influence on whether people are able to maintain healthy lives. The school can help determine the health condition of the students through regular health examination. Before any health examination is done, the school health officials should meet the teachers and students to brief them on the need to undergo health examinations. The teachers can be made aware of how to deal with students who have health problems. The students should be made conscious of observing health rules to keep themselves healthy and to cope with the challenges of school life. Health Examination is the process of determining or diagnosing a persons health status and detecting the presence of physical defects or impaired health. This can be done by doctors or physicians, nurses, dentists and teachers This is done every year to assess the progress of the students in terms of growth and development This allows the students to understand that health is a basic consideration in order to enjoy life Importance of a Health Examination: Having a regular Health Examination is an important aspect in maintaining good health It is a helpful tool in assessing the condition of a person It is a time when a person can ask questions and talk about any health concerns and health- related issues with the proper personnel A head- to- toe check up can help identify any medical or health problems a person may have. It help the students recognize and identify health problems that need immediate care Thus, proper treatment could be given right away. The physician can also discuss any medical condition requiring attention. Communicable or noncommunicable disease may be prevented. It is, therefore, very important that an individual visit a doctor for a checkup at least once a year. Evaluation: 1. What is Health Examination? 2. Draw a flower with five petals. Write on each petal the importance of having a regular Health Examination. 3. Draw balloons. Write on each balloon the persons who are responsible in conducting regular Health Examination. 4. Health IV (First Grading) Activity No. 1.2 Activity Title: The Seven Major Health Examinations Learning Targets: Enumerate the Seven Major Health Examinations Identify the materials used in performing the health examinations Reference: Enjoy Life with P.E. and Health IV Author: Grace Estela C. Page Number: 122- 123 Type of Activity: Concept Notes There is a need for a health examination The different health examinations are the following: vision test, hearing test, weight measurement, dental examination, pulse rate, height measurement, medical examination The materials used in different health examinations are the following: snellen chart, tuning fork, weighing scale, BMI table, height scale or tape measure or height chart , stop watch The Dental and the Medical Checkup should be scheduled separately , this will be done through the help of a doctor and a dentists Vision Test- is done to determine who among the students has visual defects. Hearing Test- the use of the winding watch, tuning fork, and whisper test can detect hearing problems in a student Weight Measurement- the goal is to maintain an ideal or normal body weight Pulse Rate- this is done by placing the index finger and the middle finger on the wrist Height Measurement- is one of the indicators of a students past nutritional status Evaluation: 1. The World Health Organization defines Positive Mental Health as a state of well- being in which the individual realizes his own ability. A person who is Mentally Healthy: Evaluation: 1. There are factors that affect mental health. These are the following: Hereditary Factor It refers to the Physical or Mental characteristics that parents pass on to their children Physical Factors- the physical condition of an individual has a direct effect on his mental health. Studies show that an individual who is often sick or malnourished tends to be slow. Being physically weak may make a person prefer being alone, such isolation causes loneliness and insecurity Socio Cultural Factors- An individual develops attitudes and behavioral patterns from past experiences. The home being the first environment of the individual influences his behavior and attitude. The community where an individual belongs will contribute to the development of his mental health. A sense of belonging and understanding among the members of the community can foster desirable attitudes. Schools and Religious Institutions help in molding an individuals personality by focusing on his interests I. Fill- in the table below. Mateo, Ph. D. Page Number: 132 Type of Activity: Concept Notes A Mental Disorder is a severe impairment of an individuals mental, emotional, or behavioral functions. It is a condition that hinders a person from adjusting his behavior to other people and his surroundings. It may be due to genetics, personal problems, lack of food, a weak nervous system, injuries, trauma, alcoholism, human rights abuse and drug abuse Every day, people encounter different situations that can bring about stressful feelings, this stress can cause disturbances in a persons mind. Unhealthful ways of dealing with stress result in mental disorder. Some examples of mental disorders are: Depressive Disorder, Anciety Disorder, Bipolar Disorder, Attension Deficit/ Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Phobia, Schizophrenia etc.

Mateo, Ph.D. Page Number: 132- 135 Type of Activity: Concept Notes Prevention of Mental Disorders Promoting positive mental health is a way of preventing mental disorders. Role of the World Health Organization ( WHO), Regional Office for Southeast Asia ( SEAR): supports the countries in Southeast Asia in promoting mental health and reducing the burdens associated with mental disorders. It undertakes studies and the collection of information on mental health in order to develop effective interventions. It promotes specific strategies, such as community- based mental health programs Control of substance dependence Prevention of harm from alcohol Training of general physicians in the management of common mental illnesses. Role of the Government : The Government ensures that Mental Health services are available in the public health and hospital system of the country. These services have promotive, preventive, curative, and rehabilitative components. Role of the Family and the Community: Experts agree that the family plays an important role in keeping a member mentally healthy. A loving environment helps build the self- esteem, confidence, and sense of security of a family member The community can provide an environment that challenges a persons creativity. It can build facilities that are beneficial to children like playgrounds and libraries The community and school can also help in providing seminars to help parents cope with possible mental health problems of their children Answer the following questions: 1. Discuss the common preventive measures against Mental Disorders. 2. Prove that the family and the community can greatly help in keeping their members mentally healthy. 3. How do institutions help in preventing mental illness? What are the most common mental disorders among the young people in the urban areas? Cite causes; prevention and treatment; help extended by different professionals in the mental health field like psychiatrist, psychotherapists, and social workers.

Unit I : Health Analysis and Mental Health Lesson 3: Mental Disorders Health IV (First Grading ) Activity No. 3.3 Activity Title: The Proper Ways of Dealing with Mentally Challenged Individuals Learning Target: Observe the proper ways of dealing with mentally challenged individuals Reference: Enjoy life with P.E. and Health IV Author: Grace Estela C. Mateo, Ph. D. Page Number: 136 Type of Activity: Concept Notes Dealing With Mentally- Challenged Individuals Evaluation: 1. Describe the proper ways of dealing with mentally challenged individuals. People find it difficult to deal with mentally- challenged individuals Instead of helping them, some laugh at them and even make fun of them People who are mentally challenged should be given proper care and attention. The family members of these people should have enough patience and understanding. Take the patient to a mental institution where proper care and medical attention can be given to them. Caring for a mentally challenged person is a great endeavor They do not need pity from us, they need love, care, and most of all our understanding.

2. Work with a partner. Interview a person in the community who has a mentally disorder member of the family. Get tips on how their family managed properly the mentally challenged person. Write the results on your sheet of paper.

3. Let the students collect articles from magazines or draw about persons suffering from mental illness and the proper ways of dealing the mentally challenged individuals.

Aging is a normal developmental factor and a continuous lifelong process that begins at birth and ends in death. Changes Brought About By Aging Physical Changes As an individual reaches his or her twenties, physical aging begins. Other organs, especially the five senses, slowly weaken. Mental Changes

Older people do not learn new things as quickly as young people. Some people suffer from dementia, a disease which interferes with the normal working of mind. People who suffer from dementia lose their memory Another mental deterioration that occurs in old age is Alzheimers Disease gradually lose their memory, power of speech, and control of body movements. Sociological Changes

Include the loss of a spouse Mandatory retirement Problems with mobility Lack of involvement in community activities Inadequate resources for medical services Financial problems Loss of role identification Loneliness Answer the following questions:

Citizens can avail themselves of discounts at drug stores, in public transportation, movie houses, restaurants, etc. >It also provides some financial assistance to members who are sick. >Give financial assistance to d families of recently- deceased members.

Homes for the Aged >There are homes for the aged that house older people who have no one to look after them. >Some doctors, nurses, and caregivers take care of the old people in the institutions.

Evaluation:

Death is a part of life and should be understood fully with appreciation and acceptance. Grief responses are normal and necessary. Certain cultural activities and rites may follow after death. Individuals need emotional comfort during bereavement The death of a loved one can temporarily depress a person. The loss of loved one can lead to emotions such as: Denial- disbelief and non- acceptance of death Anger- feeling of being cheated Bargaining- striking a compromise Depression- being withdrawn and going through prolonged periods of silence or crying Getting together and socializing with other members of the family may help release some of the feelings of grief.
