Introduction
Introduction
The Management-related programs of the Ateneo are, by design, General Management programs that do not provide any functional specialization: that is, there are no degrees in Accounting, Marketing, Finance, etc. unlike other business schools. It is believed that this overall program design is consistent with the School of Managements, as well as the Loyola Schools theory of liberal education. Some students feel, however, that their own career and personal development objectives require a greater degree of functional area specialization which is available in JGSOMs program design. Minor programs were therefore set up within the School of Management to provide students with the opportunity to have a structured and coherent program of study within particular functional areas.

The B.S. Management program is devoted to developing the next generation of high-impact entrepreneurs by giving students not just the theoretical frameworks but also the practical experience that will maximize their potential for future business success. The program curriculum is designed to develop in our students the sort of entrepreneurial eye and attitude that will help them to see opportunities where others might see problems, to innovate where others might be contented to simply keep things the same, to say I will do it where others might be contented to simply wait for someone else to do it. To achieve this, the major curriculum of the program is heavily project- oriented, with an emphasis on experiential and hands-on learning, rather than just classroom-based and textbook learning. Over the four years of the program, students are given multiple opportunities to hone their business planning skills.

B.S. Management Honors is an entrepreneurship program that relies heavily on an experiential learning framework in its approach to education. Thus, the curriculum emphasizes project work and hands-on exposure as a necessary complement to textbook learning and academic work, to create a richer, fuller, and more student-centered learning experience. Students enrolled in the program will be exposed to all the basic functional areas of management, with a special focus on the needs of small-to-medium sized enterprises and family businesses. Because it is the schools belief that entrepreneurship is best learned through practice rather than just in theory, students will be given multiple opportunities to prepare business plans and to actually execute these plans over the four years of the program. The curriculum is designed to develop in our students an eye for spotting opportunities and the entrepreneurial outlook that will move them to seize these opportunities as they become available, rather than to simply stand on the sidelines as mere spectators. This sort of eye and outlook will prove invaluable to them wherever their professional lives may take them, whether they start up their own entrepreneurial ventures, or go to work in multinational corporations. The Honors program in management is open only to applicants who score in the top 10% of the Ateneo College Entrance Test. An excellent additional avenue for learning comes from being in a class made up of only highly- intelligent, highly motivated, and self-driven individuals.
The Management Honors program is able to attract many of the best undergraduate business students in the country because of the rigorous and exacting standards that only a few of the very best of our students have been able to meet.

The B.S. Management, major in Legal Management, or LM Program, is designed to create managers and entrepreneurs with a working knowledge of the legal environment within which all enterprises must operate. On top of the regular business curriculum is added a law curriculum which covers all the major components of law that are encountered in the conduct of business: taxation, labor law, partnership and corporation law, laws on intellectual property. The course is not designed to be a preparation for law school, but has proven to be an excellent pre-law program, nevertheless. It can be especially appropriate for students who are considering a career in law, but are not certain that it is for them. The exposure to law subjects at the undergraduate level can help these students make a final determination as to their preparedness and interest in pursuing the legal profession. Legal Management is designed primarily to be an entrepreneurial program, giving students the theoretical as well as the practical tools to effectively run an enterprise. The law subjects can provide LM graduates with a competitive edge in the increasingly legalistic business environment. Most of the major subjects involve teamwork because this is the way the real world operates. The ability to manifest leadership and take control in a team-oriented environment are today pre-requisites for business success. Students are trained to prepare business plans that are supported by extensive market research and analysis, and are asked to execute one such business plan as a requirement for graduation.

The Management Engineering, or ME program of the John Gokongwei School of Management is one of the most prestigious undergraduate degree programs of the Ateneo de Manila, if not the entire country. Admission into the program is limited only to applicants who score in the top 10% of the Ateneo College Entrance Test. This Honors program combines the Ateneos traditional strength in the liberal arts with a strong foundation in business management and the decision sciences to create a curriculum that prepares students to meet the challenges of leading modern, information and technology intensive organizations. Courses cover all the functional areas of business and management, with a special focus on technology management, systems thinking, and the scientific approach to problem solving and decision making. The program also allows students to take electives to gain further knowledge and skills in topics of personal interest. Management Engineering students must hurdle rigorous academic standards in order to complete the program. Student performance is evaluated year-on-year to determine compliance with strict retention requirements. The program produces highly motivated graduates who are wholistic in their world view, highly analytical in their decision making, and prepared to assume leadership roles in the workplace. ME graduates are highly regarded and heavily recruited by top-tier corporations, both local and multinational, across a variety of industries.

B.S. Management of Applied Chemistry, or MAC, is the first academic program of its kind in the Philippines. It is a combination of two unlikely partners: Management and Chemistry. Launched in 1995, it is designed to develop managers and entrepreneurs for chemistrybased industries: business people with a strong technical background and working familiarity with the chemical processes used in manufacturing operations. This 4-year program draws together courses from the disciplines of Management and Chemistry to create a science-based entrepreneurship program with a strong hands-on and project orientation. Chemistry I taught from a more applied perspective, and the accompanying laboratory work will focus on more practical approaches. The Industrial Chemistry course, designed specifically for students enrolled in this program, will expose MAC majors to basic manufacturing processes and operations of chemistry-based industrial concerns, using a combination of lectures and plant visits. Students are also given hands-on experience in the production of a wide range of simple chem-based products, such as paints, essential oils, and food flavorings. The centerpiece of the program is a sequence of courses that requires students to use market research to identify unfilled product niches in the market, go to the laboratory to design the product that will fill this niche, and then create and execute a business plan to launch and market this new product. Students who would like to start up their own small-scale manufacturing ventures or work in business dealing with chemistry-based products such as pharmaceuticals, processed foods, rubbers, personal care products, and plastics will benefit from the training provided by this program. In an increasingly competitive global marketplace, it is important for managers and entrepreneurs not just to understand the markets that they serve, but to have a deeper appreciation for the products that they manufacture and the processes used to produce them. The MAC program covers all major functional areas of both Management and Chemistry, to provide its graduates with a strong science and technology base that can provide them with a competitive edge, whether they go on to start up their own micro-venture or go to work for a major manufacturing concern.

The B.S. Management, major in Communications Technology Management program, more often known simple as Comtech, is one the most innovative programs offered by the John Gokongwei School of Management. Its first batch of students graduated in 1998, and the program continues today to be the only one of its kind anywhere in the country. Comtech is an interdisciplinary program that pulls together courses from the fields of Management, Mass Communication, Telecommunications and Computer Science, to create a multi-faceted curriculum that develops business leaders and managers especially equipped for the rapidly changing Communications industry: professionals who are conversant with the creative processes that drive the industry, as well as the convergent technologies that are transforming it. Students enrolled in this program will be exposed to both the communications theories and the technological tools that are driving todays information society. The programs flexible design allows students to pursue any one of the three tracks that have been built into the program: telecommunications, media management, and marketing communications. Conversely, students may also opt to take a combination of courses offered under the different tracks, rather than to restrict themselves to any one track in particular. The program curriculum is heavily project-oriented, and helps the students to develop a strong team orientation that is especially appropriate to the industry. Comtech is especially designed to increase the pool of creative, business-oriented, and tech-savvy entrepreneurs and leaders of organizations that are engaged in marketing, advertising, public relations, media, and telecommunications.

The world of technology, especially information and communications technology (ICT), is inducing sweeping changes in the way people live, work, communicate, and entertain themselves. These changes create exciting new opportunities for aspiring young entrepreneurs. The B.S. Information Technology Entrepreneurship, or I.T.E program, is designed to create a structured and yet vibrant environment for students to become the next generation of high-impact entrepreneurs, turning their I.T.-based business ideas into actual start-up ventures. The program curriculum begins with a strong foundation in I.T. fundamentals that will enable students to turn their I.T.based product idea into a working prototype. The program then adds to this an overlay of management courses and a business incubation program that will help students bring their product to market. Students enrolled in this program may elect to pursue either of two I.T. tracks, Games Development or Applications Development, to serve as the platform for their new business venture. Students who successfully complete the program will not be looking for new jobs when they graduate: they will be offering jobs to other young graduates looking to become part of the next-generation business success story!

Management
OBJECTIVES:
JGSOM Minors
Regardless of the path that Ateneo graduates choose to pursue, most of them will eventually find themselves holding positions of responsibility with the organizations that they join. Every time that they do so, they will find that they can more effectively manage the teams and the organizations that they lead if they have had more formal training in the various functional areas of management. It does not matter whether they are running a business or a household, a museum or a professional association, a school or an NGO whenever results need to be achieved and resources are limited, whenever responsibility and accountability go hand-in-hand, whenever people and funds have to be organized, managed, and led, knowledge of the core management disciplines will prove to be invaluable. JGSOM would thus like to offer students in non-business courses the possibility of acquiring a working knowledge of the core management disciplines by offering this minor program in Management.

Project Management
OBJECTIVES:
JGSOM Minors
Business across industries are valuing project management skills more and more for the successful planning and execution of various initiatives, including the likes of research, marketing campaigns, product development, business process reengineering, construction, mergers and acquisitions, and even corporate restructuring. In fact, in a survey of recent Ateneo graduates, project management has been called out as a field of study that they would have wanted further emphasized in the curriculum given their current experience in the workplace. To address this gap, the John Gokongwei School of Management is introducing the Minor in Project Management which provides coverage of both the technical and social aspects of managing projects. It likewise provides an avenue for students to apply the tools and techniques in managing scope, time, quality and resources in a two semester long, real-life project. Moreover, the minor program can actually be the first step in gaining certification from the Project Management Institute (PMI) as it fulfills the latters 35 hour formal instruction requirement.
LS10/LS100 *Note:There is no information yet on the required grades on these subjects to be able to apply for the minor program.

Shifting Experiences
Shifting Experiences
First things first. It is important that you are 100% sure you want to shift. Go to the guidance, and take a look at the course descriptions again and perhaps seek some advice from the counselor, it helps... The SOM office will give you a basic list of requirements [depending on which course you are shifting to and from]... letter of intent to program director, my contact details, a photocopy of my grades, and a 2x2 ID photo. When you plan on shifting, be sure that you do it as soon as possible... ...you will need an extraordinary amount of patience and energy in dealing with the offices... Youll need to secure a Load Revision Form, and fill out all the details needed, such as your reasons for shifting. Then you will have a very long trip of waiting for offices to sign your papers. Some of the places youll need to go to are SOM, the Registrar, and the ADAA. After this, the program director will interview you, and he will explain to you the course grade requirements and subjects... Shifting generally shouldnt be difficult as long as you meet the requirements... itd be better if you went to the department regularly to know your shifting status (if they dont already give it to you at once), or you can check AISIS...[to avoid delays and confusion in signatures needed and interview schedules]
