the season for enjoying the fullness of lifepartaking of the harvest, sharing the harvest with others, and reinvesting and saving portions of the harvest for yet another season of growth. -Denis Waitley

With summer a distant memory, the kids back in school and the gardens and fields cleaned out, its time to take a deep breath and be thankful for all the blessings that we have received. This is the time of year that clubs and organizations are looking to welcome new members. There is something for everyone, young and old, and we invite you to join a group, share in activities and get to know your neighbors and make new friends.

Happy Thanksgiving and Happy Fall!

Springside Seniors Set for an active Fall and Winter Season

-- Shirley Tobin
Summer has come to an end and the fall schedule has begun for the Springside Seniors Club. A shuffleboard tournament and a cribbage tournament will be scheduled for October. Our potluck supper for October will be on October 24th as the last Thursday of October is the 31st and we don't want to miss the little Trick and Treaters. After our July potluck supper, Ed Sek from Saltcoats entertained us with a presentation of his Mexican holiday. We are all now a little more knowledgeable on life in Mexico. August entertainment consisted of an enjoyable evening of song provided by Ron and Marjorie Meisner. September entertainment was provided by Shelby and Taylor Gibson. It always is a pleasure to listen to the girls. SGI is sponsoring ``55 Alive``. It is a refresher course to improve your driving. It does not affect licensing and there is no charge for the course. We need 12 participants to hold the course in Springside. If you are interested, contact Sonya Effa at 306 782-5636. Seniors Week runs from September 30 to October 6. Plans are being made with the Springside School for a program during that week.

Springside Seniors are always looking for new members. If you are 50 years of age or older and are
new to Springside or a long time resident who has not joined please come and join us. We play cards or bingo on alternate Fridays at 2:00 PM, have Shuffleboard and Cribbage Tournaments during the winter months and hold a potluck supper the last Thursday of each month at 5:00 PM. The men play pool each morning at 9:00 AM. Please drop in and enjoy fellowship and a good time.

Celebrating our Past in 2013

- Marion Ockochinski
The summer of 2013 has been a great time to take a step back and celebrate our past. The R.M.s of Garry and Good Lake both celebrated being in existence for 100 years. The village of Jedburgh had a reunion to do the same. All events were an occasion to celebrate, reflect on all we have achieved and lost, to learn about all that has been accomplished and created so that we can have the quality of life that we have and the bright future that is possible. I personally attended the R.M. of Good Lakes celebration held at Good Spirit acres, listened to the interesting speeches, enjoyed an excellent steak supper and entertainment by Brad Johner & the Boys. As I havent lived in this part of the world all my life I learned from this enjoyable event, that being said, we have farmed and lived in the R.M. for over 20 years now and have benefitted from belonging to a well-run system and having knowledgeable people help when the need arises.

called upon to know the right way to handle a situation. No one enjoys paying taxes, but seeing in a tangible way where they go makes one a little proud to do so. Congratulations to the R.M.s, villages and towns throughout our area who have celebrated milestones this year. Heres to the next 100 years.

We picked up our copy of the history book written by Dianne Stinka. The undertaking of writing about the last 100 years must have been a daunting task and every local history book is a treasure to keep safe as the people and memories they hold dont last forever. Pastor Richards words.Fall is a time for us to say so long to the warm carefree days of summer and to welcome the cooler, colourful days of fall. It is a good time for us to give thanks for the summer experience and to look forward to the new opportunities before us. This time of year is the time of new beginnings and returning to old routines. However, when we walk in a relationship with God through His Son Jesus Christ it is always a time of adventure and wonder. The change of seasons and the distinct differences between them cause me to marvel at the God, who has designed them. It also stirs up within me a heart of thankfulness, especially for Gods blessing of relationships. May you be filled with thanks to God during this fall season as you reflect on the many reasons you have to be thankful.

Happy Centre 4-H Club - Successful Trail

Ride Fundraiser!
Submitted by Happy Centre 4-H Club.
A HUGE thank you to all who sponsored and helped out with the Happy Centre 4-H Club trail ride fundraiser! This day would not have been a success without the help of the following people: x Bernie Tocher sponsorship of all the amazing homemade buns! Diamond Horseshoe Ranch - provided water truck for horses and great trails for our riders! Every rider who came out to make the day a success and help out our 4-H Club! Our 4-H families without you guys, this day would not have been a success!

x x

On Saturday September 14, 2013 the Happy Centre 4-H Club kicked off the year with a trail ride fundraiser. The day in itself was a huge success! The weather was perfect, the bugs minimal, and the riders relaxed and happy! The clubs members worked very hard to provide trail riders and their horses a great day of fun and relaxation. The ride was held at Happy Centre School, 10 miles north of Melville Saskatchewan. By 10 am, the 43 registered riders had hit the trails and ventured out for the day. Lunch was provided for the riders at the halfway point on the trail, followed by a delicious hot supper back at the school at the end of the ride. Some of the riders even took advantage of the beautiful weather this past weekend and turned it into a camp-out with their horses. Could it get any better!?!

The Happy Centre 4-H club managed to raise roughly $1400 for our 2013-2014 4-H year! With this money, the club plans on hosting some equine clinics for 4-H members as well as the possibility of some fun shows in the spring 2014. The Happy Centre 4-H Club is always welcoming new members! The club considers itself a very lowkey club with a focus on safety, horsemanship, and ride-ride-ride! The members have a very wide set of interests with their horses as well. As the year progresses the club will be working on different aspects of riding everything from jumping obstacles to learning how to move cattle! The more the members ride and work with their horses the better the team will become. The trail ride held, was a great example of the many riding disciplines that our members and families enjoy. The majority of Happy Centre 4-H members are fairly young members this being the second year as a 4-H group. 4-H stipulates that a registered member be 6-25 years of age, however, we encourage riding of all ages. The club also has an eager group of pee-wees (under age 6) that love to ride and compete right alongside the older members. If anyone is interested in joining our club, please contact Stephanie Lockhart @ 306641-5560. 4-H Registration fees for the year are $74.00, for ages 6-25 years. Please note: If your child is 4 - 5 years old, do not hesitate to call. Happy Centre 4-H club encourages youngsters to come out and ride with the group! The club looks forward to new members and new interests!

Cancer Fundraiser Opens Springside Caf

-Charlene Bateman
We held our grand opening on the 31st of August and decided to do it with a twist, by raising money for cancer. My Grandmother passed of cancer about one and a half years ago and there are many countless others who are losing the battle or have lost or are still fighting for their lives. There is a little angel named Lilee Jean in the lower mainland and she is not going to make it to her 3rd birthday unless a miracle happens. One could wish, just maybe, with every dollar raised we could come one step closer to another family not feeling the heart ache. We decided to donate $1.00 from every item sold on the 31st of August, our Grand Opening of the Springside Caf. We also took online donations. At last count I have been told $800 or so has been raised and more donations are coming in! Without such a caring, loving and supportive community that goal would have never been achieved, so on behalf of Springside Caf and the Canadian Cancer Society we both would like to say THANK YOU for all your support.

Located at the Springside Rec Center Open Sat. through Thurs. 8:30 am 7:00 pm and beginning in November will also be open Fridays from 3:00 pm 9:00 pm.

Storing Summer Clothes over Winter

When storing in containers, place a dryer sheet between clothing items to help keep them smelling fresh when brought out of storage in the spring. * Be mindful of the garment bags and paper products used to store or wrap up fabrics. Plastic dry cleaner bags do not allow fabric to breathe and some papers are acidic, which can cause your clothing to yellow over time.

A Great Day at the Springside 4H Beef Club Achievement Day

-Jillian Just
Another 4H year came to a close with a very busy and successful Achievement Day at the Yorkton Exhibition Grounds on July 1, 2013. And what a busy day it was. Our members competed in the record book competition, judging competition, grooming competition, showmanship and then went on to show their calves in the various animal classes. Congratulations Laura, it is well deserved. The other two members who were in the running for Grant Aggregate were tied in points just a mere two points shy of Lauras grand total. It was decided that these two members were equally deserving of the Member of the Year award and were awarded CoMembers of the Year. The show halter prize was donated by Clayton Hawreluik of Heartland Livestock in Yorkton. Our Co-Members of the Year were Dale Weinbender and Jillian Just. Way to go! SPRINGSIDE LIONS CLUB

-Judy Berrns
We are pleased to inform you that the 24th edition of the Lions Community Calendar will be going to the printers very shortly. A big thank-you to everyone who contacted us with changes to their family information this makes our job so much easier. We have kept the price of the calendars at $10.00 each. As we have done in previous years, we will be setting up a calendar pickup day and pancake breakfast for the first part of December and we are asking everyone to PLEASE, PLEASE make an attempt to pick up your calendars that day if possible. This will help cut down on the number of calendars that will have to be delivered by our members. Each year our club offers a scholarship of $500.00 to graduating students from the Yorkton Regional High School and the Sacred Heart High School. This years YRHS recipient was Shawna Turner. Please contact your school to find out how you may qualify. Even though our club recesses for the summer, we were pleased to be able to help with a couple of events running the bar at the Springside Summer Sizzle and taking care of the barbeque at Jareds Run for Diabetes held on July 13th at Burgess Beach. We also sponsored trophies at the Springside Beef 4-H Club achievement day and purchased a market animal at the 4-H Regional Show and Sale. Our monthly ham and turkey bingos will start again on November 4th and will continue until April on the first Monday of each month. As always, we welcome new ideas for projects and encourage anyone interested in becoming a Lions member to contact us. Please have a very safe harvest!!!

40 years fly by so fast! On July 28th, of Springside since 1976 Rhonda and Murray Eastcott, residents, celebrated 40 years of married life together. This year to celebrate and remember they spent time relaxing, hiking, sight-seeing and visiting family in Manitoba and having a special dinner with family closer to home. Memories shared of the big day in 1973 by Rhonda were; walking down the aisle on her fathers arm to bagpipe music played by her cousin Lawson, her cousins Jean and Donna and best friend Nadine were attendants along with nephew Shaune, friend of groom; Dave, and Murrays brother Sterling attending for the groom. The wedding was officiated by Rev. Leslie Daly at Holy Trinity Anglican Church in Hamiota, Manitoba. Rhonda recalls the dresses all sewn by her mother as well as the veil and all the special items; old, new borrowed and blue which added so much meaning and charm to the day. Theirs was the first wedding supper held in the new community hall in Hamiota, and was made all the more special by all the hard work put in by family and neighbours. We wish Rhonda and Murray many more happy years and congratulate them on 40 years together.

The Pet Corner

Grieving the Loss of a Pet

Margaret Ann Irving
People who are not animal lovers do not fully understand how a pet owner is affected when they lose their beloved pet. Quite a number of people have pets that they feel love for that is a strong as an attachment to any human, sometimes stronger. The sheer loyalty of a pet endears them to their humans heart, some people have no children, so the pet basically fills that void, and some peoples children have grown and moved far away making day to day living a lonelier existence. To be welcomed home after a day away, or first thing on rising in the morning, by the wagging of a tail, a purr and a rub up against your leg, to feel the softness of their fur and see the loyalty and love in their eyes, makes an animal lovers heart skip a beat....then when that pet is gone there is an empty spot both in the pets favorite sleeping spot, and in the owners heart. The owner grieves more deeply than they want to admit, even to themselves, for their faithful friend and roommate. People who are not natural animal lovers think to themselves...it was just a dog, or just a cat, or maybe even a bird, but a true animal lover will understand it is much more. To love an animal is a life changing experience, an animal that would give his or her life for you should it be challenged or in danger. An animal senses when you are not feeling well, it senses when you are sad and best of all is senses when you are happy and wants to share all these feeling with you. When someone you know loses a beloved pet, take the time to tell them you feel sorry for their loss, let them have a little cry without judgment, let them tell you a favorite story of this pet. Do not try to talk them into replacing their pet, this is not the answer, when they are ready they will find a new friend, in some cases if they are getting up in years it is not wise to seek out a young pet replacement as it will eventually become someone elses responsibility to care for. Children should have a pet of some sort to teach them responsibility and to learn about the death of something you love. I am sure everyone reading this can ponder on a favorite pet from days gone by, the dog that followed you to the end of the lane and met you there every afternoon....and somehow knew just when

to be there. The cat that warmed your bed or could catch a squirt of milk all the way across the barn teasingly squeezed by a well- aimed cow milker on a cold winter day. Farm kids had ponys, cows, pigs and sometimes even a favorite hen....all that have a special place in their heart. Animals are to be treated with respect and love, and that love will be given back tenfold, then when it has passed on, only the memory will be left and the grieving process needs to occur as naturally as if it had been a human companion. When I was a little girl I told my Grandmother that if there were no dogs in Heaven I didnt want to go...the very next Sunday the sermon was about the lion laying with the lamb.....I came up from Sunday School so excited to tell my Grandma that there were going to be animals in Heaven.

The Rainbow Bridge

-A Norse Legend
Author unknown
By the edge of a woods, at the foot of a hill, Is a lush, green meadow where time stands still. Where the friends of man and woman do run, When their time on earth is over and done. For here, between this world and the next, Is a place where each beloved creature finds rest. On this golden land, they wait and they play, Till the Rainbow Bridge they cross over one day. No more do they suffer, in pain or in sadness, For here they are whole, their lives filled with gladness. Their limbs are restored, their health renewed, Their bodies have healed, with strength imbued. They romp through the grass, without even a care, Until one day they start, and sniff at the air. All ears pricked forward, eyes dart front and back, Then all of a sudden, one breaks from the pack. For just at that instant, their eyes have met; Together again, both person and pet. So they run to each other, these friends from long past, The time of their parting is over at last. The sadness they felt while they were apart, Has turned into joy once more in each heart. They embrace with a love that will last forever, And then, side-by-side, they cross over . . . together.

Discovering Roots
The Springside Town Office has recently received two letters that may be of interest to some residents. Each of the letters has requested information on former residents from years gone by. The town has replied to the letter about Mr. Reedman (including a photo of the cenotaph) but if anyone has more information Mr. Juniper would appreciate hearing from you. The following are excerpts of the two letters that were received:
I would just like to thank the Saskatchewan Cemeteries Project for all the work they have done to list and photograph all the graves in the Springside Cemetery. For some time I have been searching for James Mitchell Stewart and his family. James was born in Crieff, Perthshire, Scotland on the 8th of October 1882 three and a half hours after his twin brother Walter Andrew Stewart. Unfortunately Walter was killed during the First World War and it wasn't until late last year I discovered he had a twin brother, James. I was very moved to find the graves of James Stewart, his wife Sarah Stewart and their son Walter Pendlebury Stewart. I am also very happy to see that they rest in the Springside Cemetery as Springside is obviously a town its residents can rightly be proud of. Yours Sincerely S. Peter Wilke Perthshire Scotland I live in Aldbury, a small village (population appx 1000) on the Hertfordshire/Buckinghamshire border in England. Our village church has a memorial plaque to 26 men who gave their lives during WW1 and I am trying to discover more about these people as most no longer have traceable relatives in the area. One of the men listed is Arthur Reedman whose parents lived in the village at the time. He served in the 46th Canadian Infantry and was awarded the Military Medal but was killed in 1918. I have found his military attestation paper on your excellent Library and Archives Canada website

and his details state that he was and his time of enlistment in 1916... A probationer for the Ministry, a Methodist, 24 years old, unmarried , living in Springside Sask. I am still getting to grips with the information available on the web and so don't know whether there are any census / immigration etc. records on which he would appear and any suggestions of where to look would also be welcome. If you or your colleagues can help with these questions or have any other information you think would be of interest we would be most grateful, but please don't go to great trouble, we are hoping this is the sort of information you have readily to hand. Graham Juniper

The pictures of the headstones at the cemetery (as mentioned in Mr. Wildes letter) were taken by Springside resident Don Werner. The link to the website is

Many thanks go out to Don for his dedication to the Cemetaries Project. In a related note, Michelle Weston will assist those interested in genealogy research. Please leave your name at the library if you are interested in attending some sessions this fall or winter.

The simple truth is that you can understand a town. You can know and love and hate it. You can blame it, resent it, and nothing changes. In the end, you're just another part of it. Brenna Yovanoff

The Beet Goes on

-Deb Keyowski
People generally either love them or hate them but the fact is that beets are an excellent source of dietary fibre, vitamin C, magnesium and potassium and are beneficial in maintaining cardiovascular health. Drinking beet juice is said to have the ability to reduce high blood. If you planted beets this year and are wondering what to do with them all, the following are some popular ways in which to prepare them. Pickled beets
! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! ! 6 whole cloves 3 inches stick cinnamon Ingredients 3 pounds small (2 inch diameter) whole beets 2 cups vinegar 1 cup water 1/2 cup sugar 1 teaspoon whole allspice !

1/2 onion, finely chopped 1 clove garlic, finely chopped 1 cup cream Handful of fresh dill Pinch off a small nub of dough and roll it in your hands into an elongated shape. Place the dough on a beet leaf and roll the leaf around it (leaving the ends unwrapped). (If beet leaves are mature, you may need to blanch them in hot water). Place each roll into a buttered baking dish. Cover the dish with a clean kitchen towel and let the bread rise for an hour or so. Heat the oven to 350F. Bake the Beetniks for 20 minutes. Meanwhile, make the cream sauce: melt the butter in a saucepan, saut the onion and garlic until soft, stir in the cream and fresh chopped dill. Bring to a bubbling simmer. Remove the beetniks from the oven. Pour the cream sauce evenly over top. Return to the oven for ten minutes. Process filed jars in a boiling-water canner for 30 minutes. (Start timer when water returns to a full boil) Remove jars from canner; cool on wire racks.

Beet Jelly
3 cups beet juice 3 tbsp. lemon juice 1 pkg. certo 3 1/2 -4 cups sugar 1 pkg. grape jello (can substitute raspberry jello) Peel beets and cook in boiling water until tender. Bring juice, lemon juice and certo to a foaming boil. Boil for three to four minutes. Add 3 to 4 cups sugar. Boil hard for five to six minutes. Take from stove, add I pdg. Grape jello. Stir to dissolve jello. Pour into sterilized jars and process in hot water.

! ! !

Wash beets. Cut off beet tops, leaving 1 inch of the stem: trim root ends. Do not peel. In a large saucepan, cook beets covered in boiling, lightly salted water for about 25 minutes or until tender; drain. Cool beets slightly' trim off roots and stems. Slip off and discard the skins. Quarter beets. For pickling liquid, in a medium stainless-steel, enamel or nonstick heavy saucepan, combine vinegar, the water, and sugar. Place allspice, cloves, and cinnamon in the center of a double -thick, 6 inch square of 100 percent cotton cheesecloth. Bring up corners, tie closed with clean kitchen string. Add spice bag to saucepan. Bring to boiling; reduce heat. Simmer, uncovered for 5 minutes. Remove and discard spice bag. Pack beets into hot, sterilized half-pint canning jars, leaving a 1/2 inch headspace. Wipe jar rims; adjust lids. Process filed jars in a boiling-water canner for 30 minutes. (Start timer when water returns to a full boil) Remove jars from canner; cool on wire racks.

Roasted Beets and Carrots

4 beets (1 lb./450 g), trimmed 6 carrots (1-1/4 lb./565 g) 2 tsp. olive oil 1/2 cup Kraft Calorie-Wise Catalina Dressing 2 tsp. ground ginger Heat oven to 425F. Wrap each beet in foil. Bake 1 hour. Meanwhile, peel carrots; cut diagonally into 3/4-inchthick slices. (You should have about 4 cups carrot slices.) Remove beets from oven; cool. (Do not unwrap.) Meanwhile, place carrots in large shallow baking dish. Drizzle with oil; toss to coat. Bake 30 min. Unwrap beets; remove and discard skins and stems. Cut each beet into 8 wedges. Add to carrots along with combined dressing and ginger; toss to coat. Bake 10 to 15 min. or until vegetables are tender.
