4. Background of the Lesson: Students have been discussing families at large group for the past couple of weeks. They are currently in the process of sharing their family
dolls with the class about half of the students have brought their dolls back. These dolls are supposed to be decorated to represent the students family.

Christina reads The Family Book by Todd Parr How many people are in a family? Explain that we will be looking into how many people are in a family. Ask How many people are in a family? Student responses - 4 - I have eighteen - Mommy, Daddy, Me, my cat - Mom, Dad, Me, Simone How could we show how many people are in our families? Student responses - Ask them to come to class - Look at the pictures on the wall - We could draw them! Kids draw their family Kids can use markers, crayons, pencils, paper, or whatever they would like to use to draw their families. We will come together in just a minute to discuss what happened! Me: How about you draw a picture of who is in your family and then we will see how many we have. Student responses - I dont wanna draw (Why dont you want to draw? Because I want to play with the Legos. Well go ahead and play with the Legos. Well have someone else come draw their family) - I need all the markers - This is my mommy and my daddy, but I havent drawn my sister yet Are you guys finished?
