Do Now

October 7th

Think about your life and what the following words and prefixes mean: 1) produce 2) consume

3) auto4) hetero-

produce = to make something, to create

consume = eat or drink up, to absorb

auto- = self
If something is automatic it just happens by itself.

hetero- = different

Learning Goal:
1) Describe the roles of producer (autotroph) and consumer (heterotroph) in ecosystems. 2) Compare photosynthesis and chemosynthesis.

Success Criteria:
Accurately identify organisms as consumers and producers, place them into a habitat and rank them from producer to quaternary consumer.

Life in an ecosystem requires a source of energy.

Radiation from the sun (solar or light energy) is the main source of energy for all living things in ecosystems. The suns light energy is captured and used by green plants and algae during photosynthesis, to make new biomass (plants) which are passed as food to other organisms.

Producers provide energy for other organisms in an ecosystem. Producers get their energy from abiotic factors. Examples of producers are plants, algae, and bacteria. Plants and Algae capture light energy from the sun in a process called photosynthesis. Some bacteria also use light energy. Some Bacteria obtain energy stored in chemicals through a process called chemosynthesis. Producers are also called autotrophs because they make their own food.

Consumers need producers. Consumers are organisms that get their energy by eating (consuming) other living or once-living organisms (animals or plants).

Consumers are also called heterotrophs because they cannot make their own food.

Ranking Consumers
Consumers eat plants or animals, or both. A food chain can be used to rank different types of consumers.

seaweed

sea snail

crab secondary consumer

human

producer

primary consumer

tertiary consumer
Increase in size

Producers make their own food. Primary consumers eat producers. Secondary consumers eat primary consumers. Tertiary consumers eat secondary consumers. Quaternary consumers eat tertiary consumers.

Habitat
a place where animals and plants live Examples: woodland, ocean, pond, meadow/field

Activity: Who eats who?

You will receive four sets of organisms who live in four different habitats. Match the organisms with their habitat. Decide who is the producer, primary, secondary, tertiary, and quaternary consumer.

Habitat: Woodlands
Producer: Stinging Nettle Primary consumer: Greenfly Secondary consumer: Spider Tertiary consumer: Black Bird Quaternary consumer: Fox Vulpes vulpes

T urdus merula

Habitat: Ocean
Producer: Phytoplankton Primary consumer: Zooplankton Secondary consumer: Mackerel Tertiary consumer: Seal Quaternary consumer: Shark

Habitat: Pond
Producer: Algae Primary consumer: Mosquito Larvae Secondary consumer: Dragonfly Larvae Tertiary consumer: Perch Quaternary consumer: Otter

Habitat: Meadow/Field
Producer: Grass Primary consumer: Grasshopper Secondary consumer: Brown Rat Tertiary consumer: Adder Vipera berus Quaternary consumer: Hawk
