Ryan Paris From the White House Staff [Chief Of Staff] by: Bradley Patterson Vocabulary: Chief of Staff:

the highest ranking employee of the White House Office inside the Executive Office of the President of the United States. The article highlights the importance of the Chief of Staff and his responsibilities. Executive Brach: the part of government that has sole authority and responsibility for the daily administration of the country. The executive branch executes the law. The President in the head of the executive branch, although the Chief of Staff is not an actual employee of the government, all his responsibilities fall under this branch and its interworkings. Informal power: a power of the president not specifically stated in the constitution. One of the informal powers of the president is to appoint a Chief of Staff.

The Chief of Staff; a crucial political figure in the White House as well as in the presidents life. The Chief of Staff is a system manager: boss of none, but overseer of everything. This direct quote from the article highlights all that is the Chief of Staff. He/she must be familiar with the interworking of Washington upon entering the White House. He/she must have the support of the White House staff in its entirety in order to promote confidence in his beliefs. Considering the Chief is who the President confides in most, he must be a firm believer in the Presidents political standpoints, although voicing of his/her opinion on certain matters is crucial. The Chief of Staff is the Presidents doorway, meaning that all political/personal matters must run through him first. In a way he/she is the Presidents keeper. He/she acts as a negotiator between the President and Congress, building bridges in order to discuss and accomplish the Presidents certain goals. The Chief of Staff is an independent employee of the President, meaning that he is not an employee of the United States Government. One of the informal powers of the President is to appoint a Chief of Staff. That being said, the Chief of Staff doesnt have any constitutional powers. This does NOT mean that he doesnt hold a critical position in the White House. Without the Chief of Staff the White House Staff as a whole would be in complete chaos. I believe that without him/her the President would have an extremely hard time dealing with the pressure of the government. The Chief of Staff can best be described as a buffer for the President. As I stated earlier, all political/personal matters go through him/her. The Chief of Staff provides the President with not only political backing, but emotional support as well.

Ryan Paris Emails: Dear Congressman Price, I am a student at Pope High School in Marietta, GA. As part of our unit assignment we have been asked to contact a congressman of our choice, with a question about the government. My question for you is this: In your opinion, would a year-round school curriculum benefit the students of Cobb county and why? I hope to hear back from you! Sincerely, Ryan Paris Dear Senator Isakson, I am a student at Pope High School in Marietta, GA. As part of our unit assignment we have been asked to contact a senator of our choice, with a question about the government. I decided to email you, not only because you are Georgia's US Senator, but also because I know my uncle, Michael Paris, has helped you campaign. I wanted to ask you about your opinion on the new Health Care Reform Act. In your opinion what aspects of the Health Care Reform Act will benefit Georgia citizens the most? I hope to hear back from you! Sincerely, Ryan Paris
