Curtin University Department of Chemical Engineering Process Plant Engineering 322/518 Tutorial Sheet 6 Pumping Liquids Problem 1 A tanker

carrying toluene is unloaded, using the ships pump, to an on-shore storage tank. The pipeline is 225 mm ID and 900 m long. Miscellaneous losses due to fittings, valves, etc., amount to 600 equivalent pipe diameters. The maximum liquid level in the storage tank is 30 m above the lowest level in the ships tank. The ships tank is nitrogen blanketed and maintained at a pressure of 1.05 bar. The storage tank has a floating roof, which exerts a pressure of 1.1 bar on the liquid. If the ship must unload 1000 tonne within 5 hours, estimate the power required by the pump! Take the pump efficiency as 70 %. Physical properties of toluene: density 874 kg/m3, viscosity 0.62 mNm-2s

Problem 2 A process liquid is pumped from a storage tank to a distillation column, using a centrifugal pump. The pipeline is 80 mm ID commercial steel pipe, 100 m long. Miscellaneous losses are equivalent to 600 pipe diameters. The storage tank operates at atmospheric pressure and the column at 1.7 bara. The lowest liquid level in the tank will be 1.5 m above the pump inlet, and the feed point to the column is 3 m above the pump inlet. Determine the operating point of this pump! Properties of the fluid: density 900 kg/m3, viscosity 1.36 mNm-2s. The characteristic data of the pump (flow rate (Q) and head (H) is shown in the table below. Q, m3/h H, m 0 23.5 10 23 20 22.5 30 21 40 18.5 50 15.25 60 8

Problem 3 A centrifugal pump is to be used to extract water from a condenser in which the vacuum is 640 mm 0f mercury. At the rated discharge, the net positive suction head must be at least 3 m above the cavitation vapour pressure of 710 mm mercury vacuum. If losses in the suction pipe account for a head of 1.5 m, what must be the least height of the liquid level in the condenser above the pump inlet?
