BYZANTIUM AND THE WEST IN 19th CENTURY

GREEK ARTWRITING: TRAVELLING CONCEPTS

KONSTANTINOS IOANNIDIS
In this essay I trace the development of 19th century Greek art historical
writing that is related to the comparison made between Byzantine and
Western Art. I focus on the concepts of symbol and allegory aiming at a
hermeneutical approach. My reading of texts written by Moustoxydis,
Kaloutsis, Papadopoulos and Xenos shows that the Byzantine art was made
an integral part of the continuum of Greek art only during the second half of
the 19th century. Crucial in this aspect was the interpretation of the Byzantine icon as a symbolic image. This symbolic character of the icon, due to its
religious function, explains features that previously were regarded as distortions (lack of perspective etc.).
