Hearing Impairment is.

Hearing impairment, also called deafness or hearing loss, occurs when theres a problem with or damage to one or more parts of the ear.

This can range from having difficulty hearing certain sounds to complete deafness.

Three Types of Hearing Impairment

Central deafness-is caused by damage to the hearing centers in the brain and is quite rare. Conductive- results from the blockage or interference of sound to the inner ear.

Sensorineural- (most hearing loss) caused by problems of the nervous system in the inner ear.

The intensity of sound is measured in units called decibels . Any sounds over 80 decibels are considered hazardous with prolonged exposure.

Some ways to reduce it.

Turn down the volume on your stereo, TV, headset on your Walkman or CD player Wear earplugs if youre going to a loud concert and while working around loud noise such as power tools, jackhammers, and etc.

Physical Characteristics.

Physical characteristics of a person with a hearing impairment are slim to none Some people that are hearing impaired may wear a hearing aid in or on the back of their ear Some people might have a deformed ear Some people might say some words differently

Mental Characteristics

They may feel that people who they talk to lose patience with them because they have to repeat themselves Hearing loss can create feelings of emotional isolation A person may feel that the focus of attention is placed on their disability and that they are not recognized as anything other than a hearing impaired person

Use pictures when you can to clear things up

Use additional helpers as needed

Attempt to speak only when facing them
