Key Ideas
The Buddha gave up a life of luxury to seek the truth and eventually found enlightenment. Buddhists believe the root of suffering is desire and that, by following an eight-step path, they can end suffering and desire. Buddhism spread across Asia and had an impact on other parts of the world.

In the 400s B.C., the religion of Buddhism arose in India.

It began with Siddhartha Gautama, a Hindu prince raised in wealth and luxury.
The story of his life comes mainly from teachings of the Buddha memorized by his followers, and legends.

The Life of the Buddha


Siddhartha set out to find the truth about life, suffering, and death.

After meditating for 49 days and nights, he achieved enlightenment and became the Buddha.
For the next 45 years, the Buddha traveled across India sharing his message.

Buddhist Beliefs
Buddhism differs from Hinduism in that it does not believe in any god or the idea of a permanent soul.

It also does not accept the caste system.


The Buddha believed in following the Middle Way to stop suffering caused by selfish desires and to escape the cycle of reincarnation.

The Spread of Buddhism


The Buddhas followers memorized his teachings. Many lived in monasteries or became missionaries and spread Buddhism throughout Asia. From China, Buddhism spread to Korea and Japan, and later arrived in Tibet.

The Spread of Buddhism


As Buddhism spread, its followers split into two major sects, or branches.

The Theravada Buddhism sect focuses on the Buddhas wisdom, enlightenment, and entry into nirvana. The Mahayana Buddhism sect focuses on the Buddhas compassion and return from nirvana to share his wisdom.
