Each student should be aware of the following information and keep this syllabus in front of your three-ring binder. Guidelines for Success Each student is expected to demonstrate Lackey Pride, by being life-long learners, showing honor & respect, and trying their best to be successful. you should: Come to class on time with a positive attitude Be prepared Treat others as you would like to be treated Follow the classroom rules and procedures Create work that reflects you, and that you can be proud of! Organization & Supplies Each student is required to bring to class: Three-ring binder, filled with notebook paper. and dividers labeled (in this order): DGP Vocabulary Classwork/Notes Graded Assignments. Pencil pouch filled with blue/black pens, pencils, a handheld pencil sharpener/extra lead, and colored highlighters. The pouch should be kept in the three-ring binder. USB drive

Assignments Assignments are to be submitted on the established due date to receive full credit. If an assignment is due on a day a student is absent, the assignment must be turned in on the day the student returns to school. If a student is absent, he/she should check Edline to see if an assignment has been posted for that particular day. Late work is only accepted one day after the due date and receives an immediate 10% grade reduction. If the answers to an assignment are reviewed during a class period, the assignment may not be turned in late. There is no tolerance for cheating on any assignment. Each student is provided with and required to sign the English Departments Academic Honesty Policy, which explains cheating and plagiarism, and its consequences. The policy is in effect for all students, even if a student fails to sign it.

Grading Policy Parents and students should check grades and assignments via Edline. Grades are based on a weighted point system: (within each of these categories will be sub-categories) Assessments/Projects/Speeches 60% Classwork/Notebook/Homework - 40%

Attendance In accordance with Charles County Board of Education policy, a student with the equivalent of two unexcused absences will only be able to earn a maximum of 59% for the quarter, which is a failing grade. In addition, a student who is not seated in the classroom when the bell rings is tardy. A student who provides an official excused absence note, coded by the school, should submit make-up work within the same amount of days absent.

This course of study is based on the Maryland Department of Education Core Learning Goals as part of the state-wide high school improvement initiative. The course content, skills, and processes are the basis for the quarterly, semester, and end-ofcourse assessments that will total 10% of the students grade. The year-long course of study emphasizes the processes of critical reading and writing. These are taught within the content of literature and language. The course of study includes: Using before-, during-, and after-reading strategies. Understanding the contributions of plot, character, setting, conflict, point of view, mood, tone, and conflict Identifying ideas that have implications for readers or contemporary society. Identifying features of language that create voice and tone. Identifying experiences, issues, ideas that contribute to universal literary themes. Composing to describe and to express personal ideas. Composing to explain or inform Using prewriting, drafting, and revision strategies of effective writers and speakers. Composing with clear organization, details, transitions, word choice, and modifiers. Using suitable resources to edit texts for effective and appropriate use of English language conventions (capitalization, punctuation, spelling, and usage) Identifying sources of information on a topic (print, personal, and electronic) Using a systematic process for recording, documenting and organizing information. Explaining how words are classified grammatically by meaning, position, form, and function Differentiating grammatically complete sentences from non-sentences Incorporating subjects, predicates, and modifiers when composing original sentences Varying sentence types to sustain interest Differentiating between the connotative and denotative meanings of words. Edit text for capitalization, punctuation, and spelling using available resources Using available resources to correct/confirm editorial choices Stating and explaining a personal response to a text.
