Establishing context
Setting: use descriptive language (emotive/evaluative)
It was hot. It was so hot that the soles of my feet were already blistered and burnt even though it was only six am. It was a three mile walk, each way, four days a week. On a Friday I had to help Momma with the chores, getting ready for the Saturday markets and look after the babies at home. I missed the calm of school on those days. The sound of chalk on the blackboard, the warm, smooth dust under my feet and the calmness of our teachers voice as he taught us how to read and write.
Dialogue: make vocabulary choices that express characters thoughts & feelings
Momma, can I aks a question? she said, Why arent the other girls allowed to come to school? Momma stretched her long, skinny legs out in front of her and tilted her head to one side, thinking. Well, Rosa, thats difficult question. Some other folks, they think girls shouldnt be gettin ideas. Girls should be working or helping their mothers or gettin married.
Characters appearance/behaviour/attitude/values
She was tall for her age, her dark skin tanned to the colour of the black mud which coated everything during the rainy season. She was a quick and intelligent child. She knew in her heart there was something more. She couldnt believe that her life would be limited to the little village where she had grown up. She longed to learn, to build a ladder for herself which would scramble up, out of this hole and into a whole new world filled with opportunities.
