The camera obscura

the first ever camera to be invented, the camera obscura, uses light from a pin hole to display an image, however the image would end up upside down because of the laws of physics on light. to fix this problem, a mirror was placed inside to revert the image. This was the first machine designed to view things in a photo form, how ever it was not until the 19th century that photos could be made.

photo
this is the first ever photo to have been taken, it was said to have been aimed at a window, however the image has deteriorate and it was bad quality back then.

Daguerreotypes
Daguerreotypes were cameras that captured photos by covering a copper plate in with silver and treating it with iodine vapour, once the photo was captured it was developed by mercury vapour and a solution of sodium chloride

photo
This photo was taken in Paris, boulevard du temple. this was reportedly first taken with a daguerreotype, the exposure time was set at 10 minutes, this was to capture all the scenery since it took time for the light to be captured on the paper. It was pointed at the street which was busy but because of the long exposure time the vehicles could not be caught on the picture.

Dry plates
in 1855, collodion dry plate cameras were made available. at first wet plates were used until 1871 when gelatin dry plates had been invented via richard leach maddox. They were easier to make and faster compared to wet plates

The brownie box

This is the Brownie box, made in 1910, initial release was fitted with enough film for 100 exposures. it came with a single speed shutter and after the film had been invented for the camera, this started the new invention of the motion camera.

35mm camera
The compact camera, 35mm cine film and high quality photos were all in research and development at leitz. The development, delayed by world war one, eventually built a camera called leica 1, in 1925. the prototype was first made in 1913.

SLRs and TLRs

Single lens reflex (SLR) and Twin Lens Reflex (TLR) cameras were not popular during the early stages of them being in production, this was because they were too bulky for practicality. The first practical reflex camera was the Franke & Heidecke Rolleiflex medium format TLR

Instant cameras
In 1948 the polaroid model 95, the worlds first ever instant capture camera was invented. Although expensive, the polaroid produced positive prints which was made from a chemical process.

Digital cameras
Digital cameras were a step up from their analogue predecessors, they use electronic circuitry, and save the photo onto electronic devices like memory cards. The invention was made in 1970.
