Lesson Plan 28/8/13 Period 4 Topic: History WWII Asia and the Pacific War & Australian involvement

in the War Year Level: 10 Learning Outcomes: Students investigate wartime experiences through a study of World War II in depth. This includes a study of the causes, events, outcome and broader impact of the conflict as an episode in world history, and the nature of Australias involvement. Introduction: Recap: ask students to recap over the previous lesson. Use paddle pop sticks with names to have people contribute to the class discussions. (15 minutes) Make notes of key points on the board Brainstorm advise students to take notes of the brainstorm The following things MUST be covered: Greater East Asia Co-Prosperity Sphere - A concept that explains the Japanese explanation for wanting to expand their territories It declared the intention to create a self-sufficient/self-reliant "bloc of Asian nations led by the Japanese and free of Western powers" Dates of the war in Asia and the Pacific December 1941 August 1945 Date of Pearl Harbour December 7th 1941 The Fall of Singapore Feb 1942 - The impact on the Allied Forces - 130,000 troops became prisoners of war- largest surrender in British history - Well-defended from any attack from the sea, but not landward side - This meant that from then on no British troops could assist in this war because they were strained to their limits in the war in Germany - Made Australia vulnerable to attack and weakened their military The end of the war August 15th 1945 Japan Surrender Atomic Bomb Hiroshima 6th August 1945 Little Boy 80,000 - Nagasaki 9th August 1945 Fat Man 40,000 Turning point June 1942 Battle of Midway stopped their naval superiority and their first loss Body of Lesson: Australians at War Summary Table (10-15 minutes) Have students create a table in their work books with 3 columns People

Places Events Reading textbook: Page 98 (15 20 minutes) Advise students to add these notes in the table that they have commenced creating Fighting for Britain -Australian airmen involved in air war against Germany -Fought in the Battle of Britain (1940) -Australians served in North Africa (Egypt/Libya) and against Japan (Singapore, Kokoda Track, Air battles over the pacific ocean)s Rats of Tobruk -Australias first involvement in WWII -North Africa from British colony in Egypt -Australians assisted in holding the port of Tobruk in Libya The Second AIF in Greece, Crete, Syria and Egypt -Greece: Preventing Italian invasion -Invaded Lebanon and Syria Sub-title: The fall of Singapore - Resulted in many Australians becoming prisoners of war - This left Australia vulnerable to attack and not well defended. Questions on Word Document to be put up on Whiteboard (20 minutes) Students are to investigate the Kokoda Track using the textbook and their iPads and answering the following questions:
Question 1: When did the battles on the Kokoda Track take place? Question 2: What was the Kokoda Track Campaign? Question 3: What were Japans reasons in wanting to capture Port Moresby and how were they planning to do this? Question 4: Describe Australias involvement on the Kokoda Track and in the battles that occurred. Question 5: What was the terrain like in on the Kokoda Track and what effect did this have on those who fought there? Question 6: What was the outcome of the battles on the Kokoda Track?

Assessment:

Monitoring student responses and ensuring they do not have any misconceptions about the content. Walking around the room during completion of activities to ensure that students questions are answered
