Grant Issues and Questions: Im quite concerned about the realities of working full time to create and run

n - an effective program and being the full time researcher. o s I have said this presents a conflict of interest. o I can design a terrific qualitative case stud! that tracks students over time and that would fit the "#$ %&'-() grant solicitation *or the I+,#+-which comes out later-. +his would be a wonderful research pro.ect/ but it is "0+ realistic for me to do the recording/ transcribing/ coding/ anal!sis/ writing of the research results "% run the program. I simpl! cant manage all of it. +he research alone would be a full time .ob and then some1 o &23 *who is scheduled to do the pro.ect evaluation also does research for pro.ects if I can coordinate with them to do the research part as well/ then we ma! be good to continue pursuing "#$4 if the! cant5wont5dont have time to get it together6.. Is there mone! to support initial meetings5planning with &237 I doubt the! will work for us for free1 o "#$ grants are feeling less realistic I$ the! are research grants and I am uncertain whether "#$ offers an!thing but research grants. I have not found an!thing but research grants on the "#$ site. o +he 8research pro.ect9 I envision would require bu! in from :rian *no problem hes alread! in-/ as well as #heila and &iver *the! have not been part of an! of these discussions-4 Im sure the! would be willing/ but it becomes a tremendous amount to manage from research perspective and Im sure it would require efforts on their part *Im still working on the grant/ so the details are not complete !et-. +racking student participation/ progress/ motivation over time. o ;e shouldnt be 8putting all our eggs in one basket.9 Grants such as the <0"% grant are feeling 2=3< more realistic to pursue. +his grant *and +o!ota/ and others to be determined- requires an evaluation component/ but not a research component. I can collect enough data points to construct a masterful evaluation much less of a time commitment than conducting a full-blown research pro.ect. &23 could conduct an e>ternal evaluation which is good for controlling bias. o Im worr!ing I should realisticall! be focusing m! efforts on

such grants rather than the "#$ grant *unless &23 will do the research-. o It would be worth determining whether "#$ offers nonresearch based grants I am not confident that the! do1 In either scenario *"#$5<onda5other-/ &23 research is willing to conduct an e>ternal evaluation *required b! "#$/ would look good for <onda-. I am meeting with them on %ecember )? to determine how this would work/ what the! would need/ and how much the! charge in the various situations. +his fee would be built into the grant budget. o I can create an evaluation 8within house9 that would probabl! meet <ondas requirements. It ma! be more impressive to have an e>ternal evaluator I will look into what other grant recipients have done. I will need to have a dollar amount that is needed to cover :rians salar! and insurance in order to submit it to the grant*s-. *I will confirm with :rian whether this is acceptable to him or noto Grants would prefer 8stuff9 rather than salar!/ but if I create enough of an e>planation5.ustification/ it ma! be acceptable. +he! wont fund 8operating e>penses/9 but since this is above and be!ond the normal operating budget/ we ma! be able to get it through. o +he <onda grant request can be for up to @AB/CCC *+o!ota offers up to @BCC/CCC their grant solicitation is not available until the spring-. I need to get &23s fee in there and would love to get some additional equipment as well but that is not necessar!. :rians salar!5insurance would have to come out of this amount as well. o re there other e>penses involved in keeping :rian on that would need to go into the grant7 <onda *and perhaps others as well- is a 0", !ear grant. ;ill the school be poised to take over sustaining the program after a !ear7 +hat would mean covering :rians salar!5insurance starting in ugust/ )C(D. o I could submit a grant proposal the following !ear as well not sure whether <onda will grant support two *or more!ears in a row6. ;e have to state how the program will be sustained in the original grant/ so to then ask for more mone! for salar! the ne>t !ear would indicate an inabilit! to sustain the program as we had said. o ;ill &!e commit to that7 If not should we even continue7 2! plan was to complete the degree and +<," start writing grants to support special interest programming *as it is/ we are putting the cart before the horse a bit1 <onda st!le grants are more palatable for this situation-. ;e have a gift in :rian he is

a tremendous asset to &!e students5school5communit!. It would be wonderful for him to sta!4 we would work G&, + together/ design amaEing programs/ units/ lessons/ test preparations/ etc. If he and I could .ust get to work it would be phenomenal. +he school has said the! also want him to sta!. ;hat efforts are being made b! the school to keep :rian7 Is it solel! m! .ob to create a position for him7 Is the district writing grants7 #hifting mone!7 Flanning5accommodating in "G wa!7 ;hat is the district doing in an effort to facilitate this7 o I have a tremendous amount of work to be doing to prepare for such programming when does that begin7 o 2! dissertation defense has been moved to #eptember *it ;IHH happen then- not enough hours in the da!1 I would like to have in writing that m! position would be a 8teacher9 position and include equivalent benefits *perhaps not identical/ but mutuall! agreed upon equivalents- so that m! retirement benefits do not falter an! further than the! alread! have *I have lost +;0 !ears into the retirement s!stem as a result of the current scenario-. o I have asked D times to receive in writing the dollar amount I would have to pa! back to &!e if I dont return I have not !et received such a statement. o 0bviousl!/ I am returning/ so the above statement ma! not be a necessit!/ but I question wh!
