Reading Direct Instruction Lesson Plan Grade Level/Subject: 3rd /Reading Topic: Summarizing

Rationale: The students have learned how to tell specific parts of a story. This will allow them to get to know the traits, motivations, and feelings that the character had that may have affected the story elements. When students can understand these traits of characters they are able to remember the characters in better detail when they are summarizing or retelling a story, which will help them develop better comprehension. ELA CCSS (s): RL.3.3: Describe characters in a story (e.g., their traits, motivations, or feelings) and explain how their actions contribute to the sequence of events. Behavioral Objective(s): After reading the text the students have chosen from their reading level the students will summarize one character, of their choosing, by using the Traits, Quotes, Thoughts, Actions graphic organizer. To be successful the students will accurately describe the 4 points of the character. Prerequisite Knowledge or Skills Knowledge: elements of a story, know what the vocab words trait and quote mean. Skills: ability to identify who the main characters are of a story. Materials/Resources - Books in all of the classroom students reading levels - Traits, Quotes, Thoughts, Actions graphic organizer for each student. (from: www.fcrr.org/studentactivities/c_001c.pdf) - A large version of the Traits, Quotes, Thoughts, Actions graphic organizer for the Teacher Input and Guided Practice sections. - Scieszka, J. (1996). The true story of the three little pigs. Puffin Content and Strategies Focus/Review: When you think about a book you are reading, what comes to mind when you hear the word character? (A person in a book) What are some of the things we can learn about the characters from the text? (Their traits, what they are like, what they do, and say.) When you are telling someone about a character in a book what are some things you should tell them about the character? (What they did, why they did it, their name, what they look like, things they said.) Objective (as stated for students) Today we are going to learn how to summarize a character to help us better understand the text we are reading by looking for their traits, quotes, thoughts, and actions within the text. When we know more about the characters it helps us be able to summarize and understand the text better.

Teacher Input When we summarize we are telling the main points of the text. One of the main points is who the characters are and what they do in the text. Like each of you, the characters speak, have traits, thoughts, and do actions. *Use a few of the students as examples.* _______ (name) has ______ (hair) and _______ (name) has _______ (hair). These are both traits. When we describe something about the person such as the color of their hair, how they talk, or the way they walk this is considered a trait. I am going to read The True Story of the Three Little Pigs, and as I read I want you to pick one character from the story and think about a trait that characters has. *Read: The true story of the three little pigs* *As I tell the students a trait of the one of the caricatures, I will write it down on the large version of the Graphic organizer.* Alexander T. Wolf is a main character in the story. The trait I chose is he has a cold. Guided Practice Now I want you to share the character you chose from the text with your shoulder partner, and tell them one trait. *Walk around to the groups and listen to what they are saying. Give them a few min to discuss their thoughts with each other.* Put your thumbs up if you have shared with your character with your partner. Does anyone want to share their character with the class? *Choose two students to come up to the board and fill in a section of the graphic organizer* Independent Practice Now you get a chance to choose a book to read and fill out your own character graphic organizer.*Have the class materials helpers pass out the student graphic organizers to each student. Call the students by table to choose a book that is in their reading level.* Closure What information can we look for about a character to help us when we are summarizing a story? What is a trait? Evaluation Formative Assessments: Students will be able to correctly identify a quote, thought, trait, and action. Full Mastery- All four caricaturists for the three characters are correct. Partial Mastery- Able to identify 80% of the four caricaturists for the three characters are correct. No mastery- 50% or less of the caricaturists for all four caricaturists for the three characters are correct.

Plans for Individual Differences

Visually impaired students: Have a Big Book instead of a normal sized book when I do the read aloud. Let each student have a copy of the book or use a cam to show it on the overhead/smartboard. ELL: Students can draw their trait, such as blue eyes, or brown fur instead of saying what they are. Possibly have books that are in English on one side and on the other side of the page in Spanish.
