Finding Success in the Horoscope

by Jackie Slevin

NCGR at UAC
FTER MORE THAN TWO YEARS of planning, UAC is finally upon us, and as always NCGR will have quite a presence. In addition to NCGRs special pre-conference workshops and certification testing (see p. 3), the following activities are planned.

N THE HOROSCOPE, we know that the part of the chart that describes ones career or position in life is the midheaven, the highest point in the chart, where we reach our peak of achievement. Its everyones personal point of highest visibility where we shine our brightest. It is our public presentation.

aggressively blazing new trails. If Mars, the midheaven ruler, is in Pisces in the 9th house, the career might take on a philanthropic or artistic slant (Pisces) through law, academics, or in a country other than the birthplace (9th house). An astrologers knowledge of this very basic formula can help tremendously in defining career potential, but it doesnt tell the entire story. The missing links in this astrological chain of command is the list of equipment needed to climb the mountain of our highest destination along with an itinerary of the journey. These required

Basic astrology teaches that the sign on the midheaven describes the type of career we seek, and the midheaven rulers respective sign and placement illustrate how and where these career energies will manifest. For example, if one has an Aries midheaven, he or she will seek a career

Influence and Tiger Attacks

IGER ATTACKS HAVE BEEN IN THE NEWS

lately. On December 25, 2007, a tiger jumped out of an enclosure at the San Francisco Zoo and attacked three young men, killing one. Four other attacks were reported in news headlines in the month of December. Are there astrological correlations to attacks by large captive animals? This matter is of interest to astrologers advising pet owners and people who work with large animals. Theoretically it is of interest as a study of the general predisposition to attacks of all kinds, whether by animals or criminals. However, with animals we have the advantage of ruling out

any conscious awareness of astrology or of numerous other social factors. This article presents a preliminary survey of the subject. No attempt is made to analyze the small number of charts statistically. Three attacks for which the time of day can be ascertained within 15 to 30 minutes are presented. Due to space considerations, I summarize findings of seven other charts, six with no time of day, are summarized. According to the nonprofit organization Big Cat Rescue (www.bigcatrescue.org),

Message from the Chair

Hello Everyone,

HE NEW NCGR BOARD MET IN MARCH and, despite the fact that the weather outside was chilly (especially for those used to warmer climates), the camaraderie among the Board was warm and harmonious. The group is quite diverse, which adds to its ability to serve NCGR.

There was a full agenda with many complicated issues to attack. At this writing, I am still not sure of the exact course we are going to take, but it has become clear (from the IRS) that NCGR needs to change its structure in order for us to continue our certification and PEP programs. Exactly how we will implement these changes will likely be determined by UAC and I would urge all those attending the conference to be sure to come to the NCGR membership meeting on Monday morning, May 19 at 8:00 AM. Its likely that we will have two organizations: a trade association (non-profit 501c6) as well as our existing non-profit, charitable 501c3 organization. I also have to report that the Board voted to increase our dues beginning with the new fiscal year on July 1, 2008. It was not something that we relished doing, especially in this economy. However, the numbers generated by our new superduper accounting system showed us that we are currently spending about $36 per member each year and that is without the $15 that we give to chapters as rebates for members who have a chapter affiliation. Therefore, we are losing $6 for every member that belongs to a chapter. Our Treasurer assured us that we cannot continue doing this for very long and, with prices for paper, postage, and operating expenses continuing to climb, we were left with no other option. Here are the new membership rates: Individual, US: $55; Individual, Canada/ Mexico: $60; Individual, International: $65; Add $20 for couples. We will be offering a three year membership option that will save you $5 per year. And, of course, we will continue to offer a Life Membership option as well, though those rates are being increased by $200 for each type of membership. But, if you join, renew, or choose to purchase a life membership before July 1, you will save money by taking advantage of the current dues rate structure. On a more positive note, I am excited about the fact that Media Director Mark Kuenzel reported that our tape digitization project is just about complete. And, Im excited about the plans that Research Director Chris Brennan has for a searchable database of NCGR Journals. Eventually, well expand this project to include other organizations, making this database a real boon to the serious astrological researcher. Publications Director Tad Mann is working on some beautiful designs that well use for t-shirts and possibly some other products to sell at UAC and in our online store. Ive seen some of his ideas and I know that you are going to want one of these shirts that help to carry the NCGR message. Happy Spring please come and say hello to me and the rest of the NCGR Board if you are at UAC. Blessings to all,

Madalyn Hillis-Dineen NCGR Chair

Midpoints in Astrological Research

by Manda Selva

IDPOINTS HAVE BEEN STUDIED for many centuries in calculating Arabic parts, although Uranian astrologers Alfred Witte, Ludwig Rudolph, Hermann Lefeldt, and Cosmobiologist Reinhold Ebertin take the credit in bringing forth the symmetry and harmonics that are involved in understanding midpoints. In his book The Key to Uranian Astrology, Uranian astrologer Hans Niggemann says: Books can only point the way. Experience alone, which means plenty of practice, gives the true interpretations (Hans Niggemann, The Key to Uranian Astrology, New York, NY: Self-Published, 1976, p. iv).

One way of practice is through understanding midpoints in chart interpretation by observing repeating patterns. A more scientific method, however, is through finding statistical significance of specific

midpoints through astrological research. Using concepts in Uranian astrology and Cosmobiology, as seen in the writings of Witte and Ebertin respectively, and my own observations (which are not cited), the following are some of the planetary pictures that can be used with lottery winning: Jupiter/Uranus = Aries Point: sudden luck, Lottery (Alfred Witte and Hans Lefeldt, Rules for Planetary Pictures, Hamburg: Witte-Verlag, 1959, p. 210); in a public manner. Jupiter/Uranus=Meridian: sudden luck (Witte and Lefeldt, p. 210); causing change of status. Sun/Jupiter = Uranus: pleasant surprises (Witte and Lefeldt, p. 69); expectation of good fortune (Reinhold Ebertin, Combination of Stellar Influences, Tempe, AZ: American Federation of Astrologers, 1972, p.79).

(Midpoint formulas are written as follows so that Jupiter/Uranus, means the midpoint of Jupiter and Uranus-Ed.) All these planetary pictures could be appropriate for lottery winning, but unless these are tested through research or seen repeatedly in a chart, it is hard to conclude which of them applies in real life situations. For instance, the finding from the study on Jupiter-Uranus archetypes in lottery winners that I presented at the NCGR Research Symposium in March 2007 in Baltimore indicated that although JupiterUranus archetypes in terms of aspects or midpoints appeared to be significant in the charts of lottery winners, there was no such significance seen in VenusUranus aspects. This not only throws light on Jupiter being the planet signifying big money but that Venus, although the 2nd archetype, may not signify

to nations and timelines, I pay attention to where the eclipses physically take place as to their maximum effect. For instance, eclipses exert a physical effect on Foucault Pendulums, the large, timekeeping globes hinged at the ceilings in places like Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. According to the NASA website, a Foucault Pendulum under the path of an eclipse will change direction by as much as 13.5 degrees (http://science.nasa.gov/newhome/ headlines/ast06aug99_1.htm).

the Atlantic, through Spain, the Middle East, and terminated on the eastern shore of India. Like many others, I also believe this eclipse is what Nostradamus referred to when he said: In the year 1999 in the 7th monththe Great Terror will come from the skyGiven a 500-year lead time, a change in calendar systems and the state of astrology in the 1500s, I can forgive his approximate 12-41 day error! Although Nostradamus called our attention to this eclipse, it is also notable since it formed a fixed t-square and had a total view throughout England, Europe, Middle East, Turkey, and India. More so, this particular eclipse made me see Venus in a new context, especially when it transits the same place in the zodiac as this eclipse. After all, our neighboring planet is almost identical in size to ours,

with an orbit in proportion to ours as the Golden Ratio. I concur with the Mayans, who were practiced in sacrifice, and saw Venus in this light. This becomes all too evident when viewing the direct effect that the August 11, 1999 eclipse and Venus transits had on the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center Attack in New York City. The NASA eclipse website shows a diagram of the eclipse including its greatest magnitude in Romania at 45N04 and 24E17 (http://sunearth.gsfc.nasa.gov/ eclipse/SEplot/SEplot1951/ SE1999Aug11T.GIF). According to the NASA website, the path of the eclipse begins in the Atlantic Ocean, at 41N02 and 65W05 (http://eclipse.gsfc. nasa.gov/ SEpath/SEpath1951/SE1999Aug11T

If a solar eclipse shadow can move a physical mass, consider how it must affect us. The August 11, 1999 solar eclipse physically began just offshore from New York City at a longitude approximating that of Portland, Maine. The eclipse path (like a fuse) traversed

money in the way we usually thinkin terms of quantitybut may point to the value we attach to money shown in how we keep it, use it, etc. (NCGR Research Symposium booklet is available at www.geocosmic.org-Ed.) Furthermore, research showed that a significant number of lottery winners had the planetary picture Jupiter/Uranus= Midheaven in the natal chart and that significance was not seen in Jupiter/ Uranus=Aries Point or even in Jupiter/ Uranus=Ascendant, although both are considered appropriate planetary pictures in attracting sudden luck. This provokes us to question the interpretation of the term public exposure when involved with an Aries Point v. Midheaven. It is not to say that results from a single research study can be used to conclude anything, but generally speaking it can be used to clarify the significations of a natal point or body. This also throws light on the methodology of analyzing natal aspects of midpoints to fast moving points in the chart

for the purpose of gaining additional information on existing potential in an individual chart. If a particular midpoint appears to be significant for a particular event then it could mean that a particular planetary picture in a natal chart has more potential to attract the event, or that it has the potential to get triggered during certain transits or progressions to create the event. So either we may observe a planetary picture like Jupiter/Uranus=Midheaven significantly more often in lottery winners than the general population, or we may find that significantly more lottery winners have their Jupiter/Uranus midpoint triggered on the day of the winning.

Methodology
Studies in midpoints can be done in many different ways but a practical way of conducting the research would be as follows: Choose an event like lottery winning or a motor accident where the timing error is minimal. When incidents such as weddings are used it is important to remember that the person is conscious of

the incident prior to the actual date and hence the energy associated with the event may have already been triggered. Identify midpoints that may be related to the event either through traditional or Uranian methods. Collect data from a reputable source like Astrodatabank. Create a control group about 10 times that of the test group usually done through using astrological software. Identify the occurrence of a planetary picture in the natal charts of both the test and control group Statistical test to see if the difference between the test and control group is significant. If the study is being conducted on a group of similar events like school shootings by analyzing charts drawn on the day or exact time that the event occurred, then instead of using a control group, the findings can be compared to the normal expected occurrence of a specific planetary picture within a specific time-frame (an example

path.html.) These coordinates are eerily close to the longitude of Portland ME (70W15), the origin of Mohammed Attas flight to Boston MA, where he boarded the ill-fated American Airlines flight that crashed into the World Trade Center, and the latitude of New York City (40N42), where the attack took place. Solar Maps software plots the complete path of this total eclipse, which occurred on August 11, 1999, and reached its maximum at 7:03 AM EDT at 18 Leo 21 (rounded off to the next minute). (The actual new moon takes place at 7:08 AM EDT.) If we view the map of the Solar Eclipse drawn for the above time for New York City, we see the Venus-Ascendant line passing 132 miles east of Portland (70W15), and 179 miles east of Boston (71W03). If you draw a standard locality chart of the eclipse for any of these cities (including Washington D.C., where the Pentagon was hit), Venus, located at 2 Virgo 09 R, conjoins the ascendant. The solar eclipse is classified as Saros Cycle 145. Venus went direct on Septem-

ber 11, 1999 at 18 Leo 48, only 27 minutes from the eclipse point, making this degree even more important. While it marked the solar day, it may not have been close enough to energize the eclipse point of 18 Leo 21 on that day, as it turned forward in the zodiac. On July 27, 2000, Venus direct passed through the eclipse point 18 Leo 21, and may have begun to pull the bowstring. There may have been a key event for this date in the timeline with regard to Osama Bin Laden or the 19 hijackers, or a key decision in their plans. Venus finally released the energy when it exactly transited the eclipse point 18 Leo 21 on September 11, 2001 at 7:45 AM EDT, the exact moment Mohammed Atta boarded American Airlines Flight 11 in Boston. This assured the execution of their plan, their self-sacrifice by suicide, and the sacrificing of the plane and its passengers. The precision of this event the point of no return, theme of sacrifice, and the Venus aspect is what I find intriguing. At the moment the plane crashed into the World Trade Center at 8:46:26 AM EDT, Venus was placed at 18 Leo 24.

Using the August 11, 1999 eclipse set for New York City as an event chart, we see that Mars at 29 Sagittarius will enter the Placidus 5th house (the targets: pride, speculationfinancial) on September 8, 2001. On August 10, 2001 (solar return of the eclipse), Mars was positioned at 18 Sagittarius 19, exactly trine the August 11, 1999 eclipse point (free flow of energy), and once again linking the events of September 11, 2001 with the August 11, 1999 eclipse. By September 11, 2001, Venus was appropriately in the 12th house of the eclipse event chart. Even more interesting is the astro-map for the Pentagon attack, which took place on September 11, 2001, 9:40 AM EDT, Wshington D.C. The Mars-IC line runs through Denver, CO. According to http:// cryptome.org/gsa020108.htm, Denver is the location of an unannounced virtual duplication of all Washington D.C. government offices and services in the event D.C. is lost to a nuclear attack. Denver International Airport is also known for tunnels and substructures out of sight and public access. Ive noted in my own travels through Denvers

page 6

is given below in using midpoints in mundane astrology).

Methodology Applied to Accidental Deaths

Applying the above-described method to individuals who have met accidental death due to impact, the following lists some of the midpoints that may be associated with such an event: Mars/Uranus=Ascendant: sudden injury (Witte and Lefeldt, p.190); affecting ones personality or body. Mars/Uranus=Sun: sudden injury affecting ones body (Witte and Lefeldt, p.190). Sun/Uranus=Mars: injury to the body (Witte and Lefeldt, p.190); hasty physical action (Ebertin, p. 83). All 79 test subjects who had died in an accident involving an impact by car, plane, or explosion were used as test subjects from the Astrodatabank database. A control group approximately 10 times that of the test group was created. In comparing the occurrence of the planetary pictures given above and many others, between the test and control groups, the following results as seen in Table 1 were observed.

airport, the tunnel in which the train takes you from one area to another has several doors on the opposite side from where the train car doors normally open for airline passengers, that dont make sense with regard to use for evacuation. Overall, it seems that Denver, CO may be our backup national capital should Washington D.C. be sacrificed and the unthinkable happen. In the September 11, 2001 World Trade Center attack astro-map, there is no Venus line through the United States, but the VenusDescendant line traverses Saudi Arabia, Iran, and Russia. Other lines include: Neptune-Ascendant through Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, and Russia; Uranus-Ascendant line through Saudi Arabia, Iran, Afghanistan, and Russia; and Pluto-Midheaven through Russia, Afghanistan, and Pakistan, perhaps traversing the regions in Pakistan and Afghanistan where Osama Bin Laden has been hiding. The Pluto line is especially revealing since Pakistan has captured, and been a haven for, Al-Qaeda leaders, and Afghanistan, the training ground for Al-Qaeda, has made NATO countries useful in the region.

the city like Columbine School Shooting, or an important symbol of the city like Virginia Tech School Shooting. To make sure that the events being selected had an impact on the public, only those events where two people or more were shot and killed or injured were included in the study. The natal chart drawn at the time of shooting was checked for the planetary picture Mars/Uranus=Ascendant and Mars/Uranus=Midheaven, since Ascendant and Midheaven are some of the fast-moving points in the time period of a day and can define the sudden violence (Mars/Uranus) projected through the image of the location (Ascendant), and the identity and status of the location (Midheaven). All 45 aspects were considered. Similarly, the significance of the Vernal Point/Mars midpoint was analyzed as it can characterize violence that is exposed to the public in a big way. Since the time of the event was

based on eyewitness accounts, an error of 3 plus or minus was used. Table 2 shows that the planetary picture Mars/Uranus=Ascendant was found in 31% or nearly 1/3 of the event charts analyzed at the time of the shooting. This is significant when compared to the normal expected occurrence of this planetary picture in a 24-hour period, which is 13% (when a time frame of 3 plus or minus is used, and all the eight 45 aspects are considered as in many Uranian techniques). The frequency of occurrence of the planetary picture Mars/Uranus=Ascendant was 140% more than that normally expected in a 24hour period. Although planetary pictures involving Vernal Point/Mars were not significant, it is interesting to note that the planetary picture, Vernal Point/Mars=Ascendant showed up in four of the school shootings that were one of the deadliest or gained exposure for other reasons, like

Columbine (15 killed and 4th deadliest) and Virginia Tech (33 killed and deadliest U.S. school shooting), Centennial Secondary School Killings (first school shooting in Canada, 3 killed and 13 injured), and Dunblane Massacre (17 killed and deadliest school shooting in United Kingdom). There have been other studies done on school shootings that appear to show the important role Mars plays, like significant incidence of Mars retrograde, and Mars and Sun aspects like conjunction and opposition observed in the event charts (Valerie Vaughan, Classroom Avengers: The Astrology of School Shootings, www. stariq.com/Main/Articles/P0002265.htm, March 9, 2001). The findings from midpoint research can be combined with other studies to create astro-signatures for specific events like school shootings. All in all midpoint studies are relatively easy.

What is Vedic Astrology

Jyotish (Sanskrit for Science of Light), also known as Vedic, or Hindu, Astrology, is based on the sidereal zodiac. The difference between the sidereal and tropical zodiacs lies in the ayanamsa, the difference in degrees and minutes between 0 Aries and the point at which the equinox actually occurs. To arrive at the Vedic sidereal positions, subtract the ayanamsa fo the year you were born from the tropical positions. There are several different ayanamsas used in India, but the one employed here is Lahiri, which at present is 23 58. Vedic astrology uses a whole sign house system whereby each house is comprised of an entire sign beginning with the ascendant (lagna). In Charts 1 and 2 (same chart), sidereal Gemini is the ascendant, which means thte first house consists of the entire sign of Gemini (and any planets in that sign, which in this case is Mars), the second house consists of Cancer, the third sign consists of Leo, etc. To read the North Indian-style chart (Chart 1 top), follow the signshouses by starting with the ascendant (top central box) and proceeding counterclockwise. The houses are always in the same positions, but the signs contained therein vary depending on the rising sign. To read the South Indian-style chart (Chart 2 bottom), where the signs are always in the same postiions, go clockwise from Aries, the second signhouse from the upper left. The ascendant is marked by placing a diagonal through it. Charts are calculated with Lahiri Ayanamsa and Mean nodes. Traditional rulerships are used, so that Mars rules Scorpio, Jupiter rules Pisces, and Saturn rules Aquarius. Aspects are based on the whole house system. Mars at 2 Gemini and Jupiter at 19 Sagittarius are considered to be in full aspect (not opposition), since they are seven signs-houses apart. In addition to conjunctions and full aspects, Jupiter aspects planets and houses five and nine signs ahead, Mars aspects planets and houses four and eight houses away, and Saturn aspects planets and houses three and 10 houses away.

SIGN OF THE TIGER contd from p. 1

531 incidents involving captive exotic attacks have been reported in the news since 1990, and 151 big cat incidents were recorded outside the United States. Their website contains a partial listing of these incidents with dates, 449 to date. Because there is no official reporting agency, the actual number is probably higher. According to the website, despite the recent publicity, the overall number of reports in 2007 show a decline in U. S. incidents compared to the rest of the world, due to the fact that the government is clamping down on the exotic pet trade. According to The Book of Rulerships, Islamic astrologer Al-Biruni associated wild animals and injuries with Mars, and tame or captive animals with Jupiter (J. Lee Lehman, Ph.D., The Book of Rulerships: Keywords from Classical Astrology, West Chester PA: Schiffer Publishing, 1992, p. 275, 286).. In Brihat

Parasara Hora Sastra, Vedic astrologer Sage Parasara associates the 6th house with animals and injury (Sage Parasara, Brihat Parasara Hora Sastra, Vol. 2, tr. by Girish Chand Sharma, New Delhi: Sagar Publications, 2003, Ch. 99, sl. 6-11). Sirius, the Dog Star, at 12 Cancer 59 sidereally, has a traditional association with animal attacks, especially by dogs, when the Moon conjoins it (Cornell, H.L., Encyclopedia of Medical Astrology, 3rd Edition, New York: Weiser, 1972, p. 781). In Vedic astrology, the Moons mansion or Nakshatra associated with Sirius is Pushya, which is located between sidereal 3 Cancer 20-16 Cancer 40.

time elapsed before officials were aware that a tiger was actually out of its cage. Therefore, the chart is drawn for 4:30 PM. The victims were reported to have taunted the tiger before it jumped out of its cage, and the postmortem of the young man who was killed found alcohol in his blood. Later investigation revealed that the enclosure was two feet shorter than the recommended height of 14 feet. (This information was culled from www.foxnews.com, and www.cbc.ca/world/story/2008/01/02/ tiger-attack.html by Associated Press.) An attack at sunset is no surprise, as that is when cats are awake and hungry. In this chart, Mars is only 3 above the eastern horizon in Gemini, opposite Jupiter with an orb of only one degree. Jupiter is in its own sign of Sagittarius, while Mars is disposited by Mercury, which is conjunct Sun and Jupiter in the 7th house. Mars and Jupiter are strengthened by being in

San Francisco Zoo Attack

emberletter seeks Articles about the U.S. Election. Throughout 2004,

the late Mary Downing wrote a series of articles in memberletter about the 2004 U.S. presidential election, which were quite unique. Never predicting a winner, she focused on the political climate as the issue went to press, utilitzing horoscopes of the United States, presidential and vice-presidential candidates, and their spouses. When those candidates, including those running in the primary, did not have a birth time, calculations were based on aspects in the chart that were not dependent on times. Charts were also done for the inauguration, election, and when candidates declared their presidency. Hopefully, as the year progresses, we will have more precise birth information for all our candidates. If you wish to submit an article about the upcoming election please query me at memberletter@geocosmic.org, adhering to the deadlines on p. 8. In the October-November issue, we will ask several astrologers who use a variety of techniques to predict the winner, and to explain, using their respective systems, how they came to that conclusion. If you wish to contribute to that issue, which will consist of short pieces, please let me know. Please continue to routinely check www.astrodatabank.com for all updated information about the candidates birth data. I look forward to hearing from you in the next few weeks and months. components of success are crucial in reaching goals, but are not readily defined or delineated in standard astrology. Thus the term success can be elusive in horoscope analysis. One cannot find success in ones chart without knowing how to harness the fundamental concepts of success within himself or herself. Success means the realization of goals. Once we reach that goal, the end-product of the goal needs to be placed into the world at large. In short, the skill and goods of the success need to be moved outside the sphere of the individual who created them and into the marketplace for public presentation, or from low visibility to high visibility. The key word here is move. Products require transportation to reach the market just as a job applicant needs a form of transportation to reach the interview. They have to move their goods. Society conditions us to devise a plan, rework and refine it, establish a goal, and put the result out in the public eye. Once you do, youll have what is known as a

career. Sounds easy, right? Maybe. But maybe not. Aside from the Saturnian qualities of ambition and discipline, what factors in a horoscope facilitates the moving of ones goods from low visibility to high visibility?

Principal Planet
While the midheaven, its ruler, and placement describe the basic characteristics of a prospective career, it does not tell the whole story of professional success. A journey of career training worthy of its effort is required to reach the peak of our public presentation, namely, the midheaven. And it is represented as follows: Planets that aspect the Midheaven describe the equipment needed to climb the mountain to our highest destination. Aspects to the Midheaven describe the journey (Jackie Slevin, Finding Success in the Horoscope, Lake Worth FL: Ibis Press, 2008, p. 7). The planet that most closely aspects the midheaven is the planet I refer to as the principal planet. The characteristics of this planet represent the list of details

required in ones arsenal of equipment to reach ones personal summit and, as a result, have a huge impact on the midheaven. For example, an individual could have the sign Sagittarius on the midheaven, indicating a tendency to seek a career in advertising, education, travel, industry, religion, or law. If, however, the principal planet is Venus, the constant companions en route to the summit of achievement may include artists, performers, musical instruments, beauty consultants of all kinds, mediators, and diplomats. This Venusian influence will add another layer to their Sagittarian career influence, suggesting a blend of the two planetary and sign attributes, including a lawyer who represents artists, a music teacher, a beauty consultant to a foreign clientele, an international performer, or someone who studies art abroad. Someone with a Leo midheaven seeks administrative authority, creativity, and a venue for performing or display. If the principal planet is Mercury, talent in communication or writing buoys him or her up to the Leo summit. If the aspect between the principal planet and the

DARK SIDE OF VENUS contd from p. 6

What about the future and does the August 11 eclipse still have an effect? This depends on how long the effects of an eclipse last, which elicits different opinions among astrologers. Some say six months and some say five years. This eclipse was in a fixed fire sign and may last whoknows-how-long. What may be the active factor can be seen in the following pattern. Since the August 11, 1999 eclipse, Venus transited the eclipse point of 18 Leo 21 on the following dates: September 11, 1999, July 27, 2000, September 9, 2001, June 30, 2002, August 13, 2003, September 23, 2004, July 13, 2005, August 27, 2006, June 26, 2006, August 30, 2007 R, September 18, 2007. Since every eight years, Venus will transit the same degree on approximately the same date, Venus will again visit 18 Leo 21 July 27, 2008 and then on September 11, 2009, a repeat of the 2000-2001 transits. The August 11, 1999 eclipse seems like the igniter for the oxymoronic term Modern

Religious Wars. Its sister, the next Saros145 eclipse is on August 21, 2017, is what I refer to as The All American Eclipse. Its path goes from Alaskas Aleutian Islands and east of Hawaii, then comes ashore just south of Portland, Oregon and divides the country all the way through Charleston, South Carolina and terminates offshore in the Atlantic. This one concerns me for numerous reasons. The other noteworthy eclipse through Charleston involved the U.S. Civil War in 1865 and the transits of that eclipse point backward in time coinciding with not only Fort Sumter (Charleston) but the major battles and Lincolns assassination. Here are some other interesting correlations with the events connected to the August 11, 1999 eclipse, the World Trade Center attack, and Venus. According to Dr. Nicholas Campion in the Book of World Horoscopes, the beginning of the Moslem era is dated from Sunset, July 16, 622, the traditional date of Mohammeds arrival in Medina. (Nicholas Campion, Book of World Horoscopes,

Revised 3rd Edition, Bournemouth: Wessex Astrologer, 2004, p. 485). In that chart (which could also be called the founding of Islam), constructed for July 16, 622 at 6:45 PM (Sunset) in Medina (in what is now Saudi Arabia), the Vertex of 1 Virgo 18 is closely conjunct Venus at 2 Virgo 9 in the August 11, 1999 eclipse chart. Arabs were premier astrologers, and why wouldnt Bin Laden ascribe to his ancestors practice, especially when Allah himself was once the god of the Moon, transcending the polytheistic crowd of Arab gods via Mohammed the Prophet to become their one and only God? Although we can never know for sure when Mohammed was born, many believe that he was born April 20, 571 in Mecca (www.amaana. org prophet/milad.htm), when Jupiter and Saturn were in Scorpio. If that date is, in fact, accurate, Mars would be posited at 3 Cancer 10 exactly conjunct the North Node at 3 Cancer 10 on September 11, 2001. I wonder if Bin Laden accepts that as the official birth date of Mohammed!

principal planets opposing the midheaven cause formidable delays and detours that breed frustration and conflict. Slowly and steadily, people who have these oppositions reach the summit with patience, skill, and fortitude. As with any aspect, the impact to the midheaven lies in proportion to the orb so that the smaller the orb, the stronger the influence. Lets take a look at how principal planets work in practice.

albums of all time. Crossing the genres of rock, jazz and pop, her music is now part of the American Songbook and is heard in supermarkets, elevators, and television commercials. Such an outstanding career would lead one to think that Kings midheaven, its ruler, and her 10th house would be focal points in her chart. Cancer, the sign of the public and natural rhythm, is the sign on Kings midheaven. The Moon, ruler of Cancer, is placed in 11 Sagittarius in her 2nd house exactly opposing Jupiter in Gemini with a small, 21 orb. Thus, King is predisposed to utilize the sign Cancer and its characteristics to reach her personal summit of success. The Moon also sextiles Venus in her 4th house and trines Pluto in her 10th house. These are all very positive aspects for career success and for a happy family life, but do not necessarily imply superstar status. A closer look reveals that Neptune, sextiling the midheaven with a tight 26 minute orb, is Kings principal planet, or what she uses to move her goods to reach her personal summit of success. Carole King
American singer and songwriter Carole King has been a fixture in popular culture for over 40 years. By age 19 she and her husband Gerry Goffin had penned three number one hit singles Will You Love Me Tomorrow, The Loco-motion, and Take Good Care of My Baby. Her 1971 solo album Tapestry remained on the charts for six years, sold over 10 million copies worldwide, won four Grammy awards, and is listed as one of the greatest

midheaven is a square, the route to the summit is an arduous, upward climb, but surmounting the obstacles builds character. Trines illustrate a painless ascent, almost like being airlifted to the top. Sextiles indicate signposts and helping hands and are ever present along the route. Principal planets conjunct the midheaven provide an advantageous head start that facilitates less climbing, and

The U.S. Marines were re-established for the purpose of opposing the Barbary Pirates (Islamic) back in the early 1800s (to the shores of Tripoli). In the September 11, 2001 chart, Venus is 18 Leo 24, closely conjunct Venus at 19 Leo 47 in the chart of the first key engagement with the Barbary Pirates on July 14, 1804, Tripoli, Libya. These Venuses also conjoin the natal North Node at 20 Leo 9 in the chart for the first founding of the Marines on November 10, 1775, and the Marines lost that first battle. Comparing the founding chart of Islam with the natal chart for George W. Bush is also very interesting. Bushs Venus at 21 Leo 29 (also conjunct the above Venuses) conjoins Islams Mercury at 20 Leo 16, his Saturn at 26 Cancer 30 conjoins Islams Sun at 25 Cancer 26, his Mercury at 9 Leo 49 and ascendant at 7 Leo 6 conjoin Islams North Node at 6 Leo 18. Maybe the Mayans were onto something after all, and Venus, which they represented as war, sacrifice, and death, veers

dramatically from the cushy, luxury-loving Paris Hilton-type Venus I thought I was familiar with. Perhaps we should think about Venus representing the Islam religion, given the strong indicator from the August 11, 1999 eclipse and Venus transits.

events. What you may also note are the solar months when you consider that crops are grown and harvested during those months is a form of sacrifice with the culmination of half of these events in September, the month of the Autumn Equinox. The following are events that occurred while Venus was in tropical Leo.

Venus in Leo
Of 44 major historic events I chose to look at that involved wars or major historic points of nations, movements, and societies, I noted that Venus in Leo was numerically higher than the other signs by a factor of four. These events are also interesting by nature to involve what I think is best put into the word sacrifice. To give some idea of proportion, 16 events have Venus in Leo and of the other signs that Venus occupies, Aries, Taurus and Gemini have four each, Cancer, Capricorn, Aquarius and Pisces three each, two for Virgo, one for Libra and Scorpio and none for Sagittarius. Of course this is a work in progress, but it still appears that Venus in Leo may be dominant in these types of

angular, or kendra, houses. The Moon is located at 6 Cancer, in the nakshatra of Pushya, the home of the star Sirius. On December 24, the Moon was full in Gemini, and an occultation of Mars by the Moon occurred. This represents a very powerful version of Chandra Mangala Yoga, the conjunction of Mars and Moon, which traditionally represents acquisition of wealth and desires. For a tiger, the desire to hunt and kill live meat might be overwhelming!

According to one source, Horn had tapped the tiger lightly on the nose with a flashlight when it was not obeying commands. The tiger grabbed Horn by the neck and dragged him offstage. Horn survived, but with brain damage from massive blood loss and a brain infection. Mars and Jupiter are also in opposite aspect here. They do not share mutual lordship, but they are in kendra houses, Jupiter in Leo in the 4th and Mars in Aquarius in the 10th. The ascendant is just entering Taurus in the nakshatra of Krittika, often associated with injury. Ketu, the South Node, is in the 6th house of injury as measured from the ascendant, in the Nakshatra of Vishakha, associated with the male tiger. Mars is in the 6th house from the Sun, and the malefic Saturn is in the 6th house from the Moon.

British Columbia Tiger Attack

A 27 year old woman, the fianc of the owner of a private zoo, was fatally mauled in front of her two young daughters after she bent down to pet one of the tigers, something she did routinely every evening. The zoo had been subject to warnings by the Humane Society that the facility was a danger to the public. (www.ctv.ca, May 11, 2007, as reported by CTV News; www. vancouvergo.com, May 12, 2007. Thanks to Tamira McGillivray for providing the longitude and latitude of 100 Mile House.) In this chart (see Charts 5 and 6), Jupiter makes a trine (1/5) aspect to Mars. Furthermore, they are in mutual reception, or Parivartara Yoga, with Jupiter in Scorpio (ruled by Mars) and Mars in Pisces (ruled by Jupiter). The ascendant is 26 Libra 10, in the nakshatra Vishakha, the sign of the

As reported by CNN (www.cnn.com/ entertainment), illusionist and animal handler Roy Horn, half of the Siegfried and Roy team of entertainers, was attacked onstage in a Las Vegas casino by a white Siberian tiger on October 3, 2003, shortly before 8:30 PM (see Charts 3 and 4).

signifying idealism, utopia, and merging with the collective, it is no wonder Kings exquisite and soulful melodies are commonplace background music, pulling heartstrings around the globe. Principal planet Neptune co-rules (along with Jupiter), Kings 5th house of creative expression, performing, and children, linking these qualities to career manifestation. Both of Kings daughters are professional musicians and, with the South Node posited in the 5th house, it is obvious King brought her soaring Neptunian talents from her early childhood. She began playing the piano at age four, established the musical group The Co-Sines in high school, and went pro at 18. It is common to have two planets in a close, if not exact, tie to the midheaven. These horoscopes have two principal planets, with each planet playing its role in moving the goods from low visibility to high visibility.

successful fantasy and horror writer ever. One need only browse television channels or bookstores to see one of his novels on film or in print. Many planets aspect Kings midheaven but the one with the smallest orb is Pluto, trining the midheaven within 1 44 minutes, determining it as his principal planet. Kings prolific literary output is replete with dark, Plutonian themes, with characters including, but not limited to, werewolves, vampires, psychopaths, and a high school girl named Carrie who uses her telekinetic power to seek revenge.

In order of exactness, the conjunction of Neptune and Mercury follows Pluto with an opposition to the Midheaven. Neptunes orb is 2 27, and Mercurys orb is 2 31, placing both planets, within a mere four minute orb, in an exact tie, to help move Kings goods to his Midheaven, or peak of achievement. Neptune is the ruler of fantasy,

and only Stephen King could invent the title character of Buick 8 who serves as a conduit to another dimension, or an eponymous character of a mysterious mist that stalks and consumes stranded shoppers. The influence of Mercurys tight orb to Kings midheaven is incontrovertible; King is

male tiger. Again the attack was exactly at sunset, and Jupiter is in the 2nd house. In Vedic astrology the 2nd and 7th houses are maraka, or death-bringing, houses, often involved when death occurs. Mars in the 6th is lord of both planets in the maraka houses. Seven other incidents described on the Big Cat Rescue website were examined astrologically, only one of which had a verifiable time of day. In six of these charts, an aspect existed between Mars and Jupiter. Out of the total of ten charts, the Mars-Jupiter opposition occurred in four, and was angular in three of the four with verified time. A relationship between the sign rulers of Mars and Jupiter existed in six of the seven charts. Three of the Navamsha (9th harmonic) charts had Mars-Jupiter aspects. Only two had an association between Mars and Jupiter, and Sun, Moon, Rahu (North Node) and Ketu (South Node). In the chart with an accurate time, Mars and Jupiter were in Kendra houses, 4th and 10th respectively. The position of planets in nakshatras traditionally associated with tigers, Chitra and Vishakha, appeared random. However,

the Moon appeared in Pushya, associated with Sirius, in three of the 10 total charts, and Saturn appeared in two. In conclusion, the traditional association of animal attacks by caged tigers with the planets Mars and Jupiter, and the fixed star Sirius in the constellation Pushya, appears reasonable based on this small study of 10 charts. The potential exists to analyze at least 450 charts, a number large enough to present opportunity for statistical analysis. If the risk of large animal attacks is indeed higher when Mars and Jupiter are in opposition and angular, then another spike in the number of attacks should occur in March and April, 2008, when the two planets again reach opposition. Anecdotally, the author is aware of reports of an increase of dog attacks on humans and of violent crime in the months of December 2007 and January 2008. As this article goes to press on February 21, Ill ask the readers to check the news reports and reach their own conclusions.

a one-time English teacher who wrote short stories for magazines and parlayed his obsession with horror and fantasy into the career of a blockbuster author with a global following. Similar to the links of a chain, Pluto, Mercury, and Neptune join forces as they aspect each other and, strengthening their already potent angular placements, project their attributes to Kings Midheaven. It is incredible to note that these three planets all aspect Saturn, giving King the iron discipline to keep to his schedule of writing 2000 words a day, turning out short stories, novels, columns, and screenplays at a continuous rate. Powerfully placed Neptune, along with Jupiter, co-rules Kings 9th house of publishing. Jupiter is in a mixed mutual reception with Mars, ruler of Kings midheaven.

Mars in Cancer receives Jupiter in exaltation, and Jupiter in Scorpio receives Mars in its own sign. (Mars is the traditional ruler of Scorpio). Mars is in fall in Cancer and is behind the scenes in the 12th house of hidden enemies, selfundoing, and secrets. Traditionally speaking, Mars is not prominently placed in Kings chart, but a closer look at the aspects to his midheaven tells a different story. The fact that the conjunction of Mercury and Neptune are in opposition to the midheaven illustrates Kings methodical and steady pace to reach the top. When asked how he writes he replied one word at a time (www.brainyquote. com/ quotes/authors/s/stephen_king. html). The sign on the midheaven tells only the beginning of the story of our journey to

reach our peak of achievement. Planets in aspect to the midheaven tell the rest of it. Using these principal planets, one can establish career goals, itemize the necessary equipment to reach the top, and determine whether the journey to the summit will be as easy as a chairlift or a Herculean effort. The secrets to success lie not in how planets aspect each other, but in how they aspect the midheaven. See it for yourself. Take out your charts, determine your principal planet or planets, and learn how to move your goods to reach your personal peak of achievement. And once you arrive at your summit, gaze at the celestial phenomenon above you and thank your lucky starsand your principal planets. Charts are drawn for Geocentric, Tropical, Placidus Houses, and True Nodes.

Book Reviews
Person-to-Person Astrology: Energy Factors in Love, Sex & Compatibility, by Stephen Arroyo, Frog, Ltd., Berkeley, CA, www.northatlanticbooks.com, 2007. Paper. 403 pp. $18.95 US/ $24.95 CAN.
HIS BOOK OFFERS a contemporary look at the invisible energy fields that exist between people. Tapping into his numerous years of experience as an astrologer and therapist, from which he extracts qualitative research material, Stephen Arroyo makes his point that astrology is experiential, particularly in the human energy field.

the reader to pause and consider the multidimensional and universal quality to the relationship quest. Additionally, he provides tools to make comparisons between Sun-Moon, Ascendant, Mercury, Venus-Mars, and Jupiter-Saturn contacts between people, and does so in the context of his overall assessment: that astrology shows experience, patterns, and flow of energy in fields of experience and through certain dynamics. That he does this simply and clearly is a benefit to all astrologers. This is an accessible work that will increase your understanding of relational presence, both personally and in the lives of clients who seek your perspective. reviewed by Paula Gassmann (This review originally appeared in The Astrologers Newsletter, Boston NCGR, January 2008.)

Readers new to Arroyos material will find a clear portrayal of psychological astrology. Fans of Arroyo who may have been waiting for another book will not be disappointed. This volume builds on his previous work in the area of elements, transformational astrology, and life cycles, and offers a refresher on this material. With a contents page that covers a preface, an authors note, guidelines for newcomers, and an introduction, before getting the promised material, I would have preferred a different organization to the first part of the volume. I wanted to jump into the subject at hand, rather than wade through the heavy reiterative building of a case for why astrology should be considered in a legitimate light. Despite the somewhat didactic tone, and despite his humble sentiment that no one knows it all when it comes to relationships, Arroyo clearly is a relationship expert. He understands the sought-after arena of romance, the longed-for intimacy, emotional sharing, and sexual expression, and he understands that there are substantial hurdles to overcome in the 21st century, for both men and women. Arroyo the realist understands chemistry and that where relationships are concerned, tradeoffs are often necessary to sustain them, and with some people, no amount of work will make a difference. He makes it clear that he presents his material on the basis of research; I was disappointed that in the lengthy appendix, Arroyo did not duplicate the sample questionnaire from which he acquired the data. Arroyo is obviously well-read on the subject of relationships. He begins each chapter with an inspiring quote that urges

Soul-Sick Nation: An Astrologers View of America, by Jessica Murray, AuthorHouse, 1663 Liberty Drive, Suite 200, Bloomington, IN, 47403, www.authorhouse. com, 2006. Paper. 220 pp., $15.95.
HIS BOOK OFFERS A PERSPECTIVE of the times we are living in. The emphasis is on the United States and Pluto in Sagittarius. Murray uses the Sibly chart for the U.S. and interprets it in depth, focusing on the greater purpose or soul-purpose of the U.S. collective, how this purpose has been distorted, and the tests to be faced and lessons to be learned from recent events, and recent and upcoming transits.

The socio-political commentaryon the oil wars, religious terrorism, the World Trade Center attacks and moreis sharp and incisive without being strident. The astrology is well-done and insightful and often has more than a touch of wry humor. For example, in discussing the Mars-Neptune square in the Sibly chart, Murray says Uncle Sam may denigrate emotional wisdom...Perhaps this is Neptunes revenge on the patriarchy: If you do not acknowledge Feminine Knowing, I will make the biggest and toughest among you weep at baseball games (when the national anthem is played).

.
Hows that for evocative? And the rest of the book is equally evocative and quotable.

page 23

While Murray discusses the ironies of the recent transits and their impact on the U.S., this book is by no means bleak or fatalistic. In fact, Murray discusses ways to come to terms with the times and respond to the responsibility inherent in the times as a prize rather than a curse. The book was designed to be read by both astrologers and non-astrologers, so while natal symbolism and transits are discussed, jargon is kept to a minimum For non-astrologers, a very thorough appendix of astrological principles is included. This is in itself a pretty good crash course in astrology for anyone new to the study. An excellent bibliography lists not only astrology books but books on psychological, spiritual, and global consciousness. There is no index. I would definitely rank Soul-Sick Nation as one of the most readable books I encountered in 2007. Its well worth looking at, and if this book is any indication, this is an author to watch. reviewed by Donna Van Toen Personal Panchanga and the Five Sources of Light, by Komilla Sutton, The Wessex Astrologer Ltd., P.O. Box 2751, Bournemouth BH5 2AZ England, www.wessexastrologer.com, 2007. Paper, 208 pp. 15.95, $30.00 US.

and Avayogi (misfortune). This technique can be confusing for certain charts, but it is handled quite well here. There are, however, a few shortcomings. The nakshatra (lunar mansion) section repeats certain elements from her earlier works a little too closely, and many analyses are a bit vague about how nakshatras manifest in a persons life. Other techniques (like the yogas) share a similar flaw, but they are interesting. Also, there is a tendency to rectify charts a little too much, as the significations in the rectified charts dont always seem to justify the additional effort. For example, in Arnold Schwarzeneggers chart, the non-rectified chart seems perfectly fine in terms of chart interpretation. Finally, there is a significant editing mistake regarding an upcoming transit of Ketu that is identified as Rahu. Sutton addresses the spiritual implications in a chart, but I worry that in some places she gets a bit too didactic for my taste. I am often uncomfortable with astrologers interpreting levels of spirituality, since many astrologers have limited qualifications to approach this topic. Overall, this is a well-constructed, interesting book. It gives a much easierto-understand presentation of the Panchanga than I have seen in other texts, and would make a useful addition to any astrologers resources. reviewed by Gary Gomes

NYONE WHO HAS READ any of the various classical Vedic astrology texts knows that a great many of the techniques mentioned never make their way into chart interpretation practices. The sheer number of techniques mitigates against inclusion of them all and some may be a bit redundant.

Books Received, Part II.

As promised, here's a brief look at the rest of the books received in 2007 and early 2008. Many of these are worth checking out: Forecast 2008, by Ray Merriman, Seek-It Publications, P.O. Box 250012, West Bloomfield, MI 48325, 2007. Paper. 138 pp. $45.00. An excellent reference book including market trends, forecast for each sign, and a calendar and ephemeris for the year. Grab yourself a copy before . they're sold out! Astrology Illumined, by Donna Mitchell-Moniak and Sara Traub, Seeds of Light Publishing, 407 West Leyden Road, Leyden, MA, 01337, 2007. Paper. 168 pp. $14.95. Contrasts and synthesizes traditional and esoteric astrology. Innovative, well-written, and nicely illustrated. Basic. Becoming Conscious, by Helen Adams, Trafford Publishing, 6E-2333 Government St., Victoria, BC, V3T 4P4, Canada,

This well-written book analyzes the Panchanga, a core astrological method in Vedic astrology, and how to utilize it in natal chart analysis. Typically, this component of Vedic astrology is reserved for analysis of muhurtha, or electional charts. Sutton makes the case for the application of these techniques quite well, though I must admit, I am not totally convinced that this technique is essential for chart analysis. It may be useful, but is nonetheless a bit complicated, and I would prefer that a new technique could provide more detail. The author explains the major components in sequence, and provides examples of how these components would work in a birth chart. She also provides an extensive explanation of fortunate and unfortunate lunar mansions (nakshatras) and provides an excellent analysis of the Yogi (fortune)

Transitions: Julian Armistead

(1926-2008)
City Chapter, I sadly report the news of Julian Armisteads death. Our community has lost another one of our great lights this year. Julian served on our Board for nearly 20 years, primarily in the role of Vice President. Thanks to his expertise from his day job in contract negotiations for Y & R Advertising, he brought a terrific business acumen to the chapter, helping us to be more professional, well-functioning, and responsible. Many of his ideas gave shape to NCGR, locally and nationally, as we know it, and those ideas are still in practice today. One of his major contributions was on the original education committee to create the certification program. He was also the

N BEHALF OF NCGRS NEW YORK

first astrologer to achieve double NCGR certification in consulting and research. His research project was his proudest professional accomplishment, a monograph on the rectified chart of the United States, painstakingly researched astrologically and historically. He concluded that the U.S. was actually born on July 2, 1776. This chart is proudly published in Nicholas Campions Book of World Horoscopes and the monograph is in the New York City NCGRs Joanna Shannon Library. Julian was ever-the-avid student of astrology, dating back to the days of the Astrological Guild in New York, and studying with the likes of Al Morrison and Charles Jayne. Although he was a man of great culture and sophistication, he could just as easily don a clowns nose, do silly antics, and enjoy quick witticisms. He also possessed a passion and kindness for dogs, spending some years as a breeder. Most of all, however, I think Julian will be remembered in partnership with his beloved, Joanna Shannon, another legendary name in the NCGR canon. Together and individually, they were great astrologers, teachers, leaders in the community, and role models from the apartment they called the love nest. If there is, indeed, a time and place where souls are reunited, then Im sure these two are joined together again. Julian cared for his own and had a deep concern for the youth in the astrology community. So, in his honor, his estate will make a donation to NCGRs Lucy Titunik Fund and the Association for Young Astrologers (AYA). Contributions to the Titunik Fund and AYA in Julians name are welcome. Being a great lover of the juniper berry, as he liked to call his gin, I lift my cup to Julians life and say Cheers, old friend.and thanks! John Marchesella Born: August 10, 1926, 1:36 AM EDT, New York, NY. Died: February 20, 2008, around 8:00 PM, New York NY.

I am happy to say that in this issue, there are four excellent articles by four talented astrologers, three of whom (Manda, Lynn, and Alex) are making their memberletter debut though they are far from beginners. I realize that with the exception of Jackie Slevins article on the midheaven, the articles all concern violent subject matter, but do put that aside, since the research and conclusions are most impressive. This is truly one of memberletters missions, to nurture astrologers and writers who want to show their wares to a captive audience, all of whom share their passion for astrology. I hope more of you will contribute.

I also hope to see many of you at UAC. I always look forward to these conferences, since I can finally put faces to the names, and greet those of you whom I already know. Please say hello to me, even if I look busy. And dont hesitate to tap me on the shoulder if my back is turned. Chances are that I wont be too busy to say hello, especially since we may not run into each other again. Do visit the NCGR table and attend the membership meeting. Have a safe trip. Ronnie Gale Dreyer

Errata ...We apologize for misspelling Liz Jelineks name in her article Saturn in Virgo, in the February-March memberletter.
