Digital Unit Plan Template Unit Title: Biotechnology Content Area: Biology

CA Content Standard(s)/Common Core Standard(s): 5. The genetic composition of cells can be altered by incorporation of exogenous DNA into the cells. As a basis for understanding this concept: a. b. c. d. e. Big Ideas: Students know the general structures and functions of DNA, RNA, and protein. Students know how to apply base-pairing rules to explain precise copying of DNA during semiconservative replication and transcription of information from DNA into mRNA. Students know how genetic engineering (biotechnology) is used to produce novel biomedical and agricultural products. * Students know how basic DNA technology (restriction digestion by endonucleases, gel electrophoresis, ligation, and transformation) is used to construct recombinant DNA molecules. * Students know how exogenous DNA can be inserted into bacterial cells to alter their genetic makeup and support expression of new protein products.

Name: Michelle Gur Grade Level: 10th

How can DNA replication and protein synthesis be used to create novel biomedical and agricultural products? Genetic engineering is used to produce novel products The usefulness of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) in our lives

Unit Goals and Objectives:

Students will be able to describe and illustrate the process of DNA replication and protein synthesis. Students will be able to determine the amino acid sequence that will be produced from a given DNA or RNA sequence. Students will be able to describe some of the techniques used in biotechnology Students will be able to carry out and analyze a gel electrophoresis experiment Students will be able to describe and give examples of different types of genetically modified organisms (GMOs) Students will be able to use evidence to support their opinion on the use of GMOs.

Unit Summary:

Biotechnology is all around us, it is used in medicine, medical research, food, and many other applications. More than likely you have eaten a food or used a medicine that was developed with biotechnology. Biotechnology is exactly what it sounds like, a combination of biology and technology. Specifically it focuses on the field of genetics. Biotechnology is not a new idea, it has been around since people started breeding animals and plants for specific traits, they just did not know that genes were responsible for these traits. Now scientists can take advantage of what they know about DNA replication, protein synthesis, and protein function and create new genetic combinations. These new genetic combinations, or novel products, can be used in a variety of ways. You will start the unit by learning about DNA replication. Later you will be exploring some of the most popular techniques used in biotechnology and get to try out one, gel electrophoresis, in class. At the end of the unit you will be learning about genetically modified organisms (GMOs) and why they have been developed. The unit will conclude with a multimedia presentation in which you will present your research based opinions about the usefulness and safety of GMOs. At the end of this technology-based unit, you will understand how DNA can be used as a tool to help humans live healthier lives.

Assessment Plan: Entry-Level: Circle Thinking Map: What do students know about DNA Brainstorm: What is biotechnology?: small group and class discussion about what students think biotechnology is. Formative: Guided Notes: DNA Replication: students will fill out guided notes while watching a Prezi slideshow about biotechnology Flashcards: DNA structure and replication: students will quiz themselves on the new vocabulary about DNA Think, pair, share: Base pairing and amino acids: students will determine the correct complementary bases sequences and amino acids from DNA and RNA sequences. Graphic Organizer: students will create a graphic organizer about GMOs using Popplet Laboratory: gel electrophoresis: students will carry out and analyze their results from running a DNA gel. Lesson 1 Summative: Unit exam: a short answer format exam covering all the material in the unit Multimedia Project: Genetically Modified Organisms: in groups, students will prepare and present a Prezi about a GMO food and defend or refute its usefulness

Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to describe and illustrate the process of DNA replication

Acceptable Evidence: Students have correctly filled out their guided notes Students are able draw simple diagrams of DNA synthesis Students are able to explain the process of DNA replication, using correct terminology, to one another

Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction

Lesson Activities: Students will begin the lesson by filling out a circle map about DNA. They will write in any previous knowledge they have about DNA. The class will have a quick discussion about what they know about DNA after they have filled out their circle maps. Students will watch a Prezi prepared by the teacher about DNA replication. Students will use the guided notes prepared by the teacher to take notes. Throughout the presentation there are important questions the teacher will ask the students to first think about themselves. Then the class will have a short discussion to share and evaluate their answers. At the end of class, in pairs, students will draw out the process of DNA synthesis and describe it to their partners

Lesson 2 Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to describe some of the techniques used in biotechnology Acceptable Evidence: Students have successfully completed their Webercises Instructional Strategies: Communication Collection Collaboration Presentation Organization Interaction Lesson 3 Student Learning Objective: Students will be able to describe and give examples of Acceptable Evidence: Students will have created a concept map showing the Instructional Strategies: Communication
Lesson Activities: In pairs, students will read the six websites provided by the teacher about GMOs. The students will create concept maps using Popplet to display information about Lesson Activities: The class will have a brainstorming activity to discuss what they think biotechnology is. First students will discuss their ideas in small groups, then share their ideas with the class. The class will go to the computer lab to complete the Biotechnology Webercise the teacher has created. The students will follow the directions in the Webercise, they will follow the links the teacher has given them to learn about different biotechnology techniques and to answer specific questions about each technique.
