MISSION STATEMENT

The Fire Department protects life and property from fire. It fulfills this responsibility
through three separate but related missions: extinguishment, prevention through
education, and investigation. The City's 304 square miles are protected from fire by 412
firefighting and supervisory units in 229 locations in the m~tropolitan area. Fire marshals,
fire prevention inspectors, and support personnel working from the Department's
Brooklyn headquarters and numerous field offices throughout the City carry out fire
investigation, fire safety education, and fire prevention activities. Additionally, the
Department responds to calls for utility emergencies, building collapses, hazardous
material incidents, and water main breaks.
