MISSION STATEMENT

As the business service arm of New York City's economic development efforts, DBS aims
to expand economic activity, retain and create jobs, attract new businesses, promote
business and employment opportunities for all groups within the City's population, and
generally maintain and improve the City's business climate and conditions.

To accomplish its mission, the agency provides a range of services to individ ual
businesses, including relocation, bonding, and energy assistance. DBS supports
commercial revitalization programs in many neighborhoods, provides financial incentives
to businesses operating in designated economic development zones, sponsors training
programs, and serves as ombudsman for businesses working with City government.

The Department provides specially targeted services to minority, women-owned, and

other small businesses, and to contractors who work in economically depressed areas or
employ economically disadvantaged workers. DBS enforces Charter, Executive Order,
and federal grant provisions which ensure that City contractors are equal opportunity
employers.
