MISSION STATEMENT

The Department of Correction provides custody for four categories of inmates: those in
detention who are awaiting trial or sentence, those sentenced to one year or less, State
prisoners with court appearances in New York City, and alleged parole violators being
held while revocation proceedings are conducted. The Department maintains 19 jails and
court detention facilities in five boroughs; the Department also contracts with the State
to operate two upstate facilities. In addition to housing inmates, the Department
transports them to court, to work locations, and to medical services. The Department
also provides counseling services, education and training programs, daily recreation, and
access to law libraries. The Department houses hospitalized inmates on three secure and
three semi-secure wards managed by the Health and Hospitals Corporation, and operates
a mental health center and five jail infirmaries on Rikers Island.
