Comments& It was a really good time to see how children in !ngland react to many different sports also it was important to see how the kids interact with each other once there were people from very different places. I really liked to be part of this event.

The Active Newham is a program that works in partnership with the Newham Counci! with the o"jective of de!ivering !eisure0 sports and vo!unteering in the Newham area. The program "e!ieves that "eing active is important for hea!th and we!fare of peop!e. The main priority is make sure that most of peop!e of Newham community enjoy the opportunity of "eing active. A!so Active Newham vo!unteers in some events in the $ast %ondon area0 such as the 9!ympic /ark. Since had the first contact with the Active Newham staff was ca!!ed to

started searching a"out opportunities in the project. Then an interview so

cou!d give them a!! my detai!s and share some of my

experiences . %ater was sent an emai! with many possi"i!ities on my area !ike sports coaching sessions0 sports de!ivery sessions in schoo!s0 sports events in the Stratford area and so on. decided to take part on the sports coaching project with peop!e from the Newham community and schoo!s. That gave me the chance of working with hand"a!! which is a sports that p!aying since rea!!y !ove and have "een was a"!e to

was a kid in schoo! and now in university. So

he!p the coaches and try to pass some of my experience to the kids.

U1251321

The hand"a!! coaching sessions were rea!!y important for me "ecause this is something rea!!y !ike to do and something rea!!y !ike to

put effort on. :y first impressions were that the kids we were coaching have a "ig !ack of experience in the game of hand"a!!. This is the first point to me. n Bra#i! a!though hand"a!! is rare!y shown on te!evision0 it is one of the most p!ayed sports in the schoo!s. >uring schoo! time it is norma! to see many teacher showing hand"a!! to the students and a!so the schoo!s competitions have a very decent !eve!. So when came to the sessions with Active Newham saw that

pro"a"!y the "iggest pro"!em was this !ack of experience which is something that it is norma! to expect "ecause $ng!and had no tradition in terms of hand"a!!. But there are some ways to try to minimi#e this issue. n my opinion if the coaches and teacher cou!d take the kids to watch a coup!e games during the year it wou!d "e rea!!y nice. This way kids wou!d have the chance to see how hand"a!! is p!ayed and get c!oser to the game that is unusua! to most of them. n terms of techni1ue saw that here some of the kids are rea!!y

ta!!er and stronger than in Bra#i! sure!y "ecause of $uropean phenotype so they have a rea!!y strong throw however they have no accuracy. And a!so another pro"!em is that they can?t use a!! their potentia! once they have this !ack of techni1ue. By the age of fourteen0 fifteen and sixteen0 most of the "oys shou!d know how to execute the three step techni1ue and perform many different jumps and throws. "e!ieve that if Team Newham

cou!d perform at !east the "asic in terms of techni1ue the team wou!d won

U1251321

many more games. At this !eve! we may ignore tactics "ut techni1ue shou!d "e given the right amount of effort. Another point that rea!!y was interesting to me is the fact that the kids from Team Newham they practice with "a!!s si#e one0 which is something unimagina"!e in Bra#i!. -nti! fourteen years o!d "oys norma!!y practice and p!ay with "a!!s si#e two0 some peop!e !ike me have practiced with "a!!s si#e three since fourteen. But here have seen sixteen years o!d guys p!aying with "a!!s si#e one. <or this reason cha!!enge more the kids so they cou!d improve more. wou!d !ike to high!ight one thing that for me seems to "e another issue as we!!. :ost of the kids we have "een coaching here avoid contact and for hand"a!! this is not good. t is known that hand"a!! is a pretty tough sport. And if the kids want to p!ay hand"a!! they have to get used to contact and a!so they need to know how to preserve themse!ves when p!aying the game. They shou!d know how to fa!! during a dive shot instead of avoiding a p!ay "ecause they do not want to fa!! on the ground. And here "e!ieve it is easier to !earn such things "ecause most of the have seen here have a good decent f!oors un!ike in my think that we shou!d

hand"a!! courts home town.

Now that

have de!ivered a!! my critics

wou!d !ike to say rea!!y

good thing a"out the sessions. <irst of a!! the faci!ities were ama#ing0 we had !ots of materia! to use during the practice. n most p!aces of Bra#i! it is hard to find good indoor hand"a!! courts0 most of the schoo!s do not have faci!ities !ike that0 and a!so hand"a!! materia! is 1uite expensive.

+*

U1251321

n my opinion the kids rea!!y are trying to !earn and p!ay a good hand"a!!0 and this is rea!!y nice. They are putting a !ot of effort for this reason am rea!!y happy. But think that they shou!d "e more cha!!enged

and start taking the game more serious!y if they want to win games. /!aying more games is actua!!y a way of improving their a"i!ities. Since went there for the first time they on!y p!ayed four games during the %ondon Aouth games. f they cou!d p!ay one or two games per month wou!d "e rea!!y nice for their deve!opment.

LON:ON 5O9-( GAM.

This event was the first one that

participated as a vo!unteer cou!d see

mem"er of Active Newham. .e had one previous session and

some of the p!ayers0 a!! them teenagers "etween twe!ve and sixteen years o!d. To most of them this was their first ever experience in a hand"a!! competition and for this reason some of them were rea!!y nervous and sometimes cou!d say they were a !itt!e afraid of what cou!d happen

during the games. <rom my point of view what cou!d ana!yse from their games is

that first of a!! there was a "ig !ack of experience and p!aying against kids that are used to this situation was rea!!y tough for the team. There was a !ack of experience in p!aying hand"a!!0 some of the p!ayers were sti!! getting used to the ru!es0 to the game itse!f. 'owever there were two or three kids that were rea!!y putting a great effort on the game and that is why Team Newham got some good p!ays and won a game.

++

U1251321

/ro"a"!y the most difficu!t game was against a team that had some kids with Scandinavian "ackground and possi"!y that exp!ains why some of them were so fami!iari#ed with hand"a!! and cou!d p!ay in a !eve! a"ove most of the kids <ocusing on the event it was rea!!y good0 great organi#ation0 !ots of hand"a!! teams from many different p!aces and different "ackgrounds were there. The faci!ities were exce!!ent "ut one thing was rea!!y weird for me0 the kids were p!aying in a different surface0 they were p!aying hand"a!! in the astro turf which is something tota!!y unusua! a!though at this !eve! it was ok. <ina!!y "e!ieve that events !ike the %ondon Aouth 3ames are

a"so!ute!y important for a great num"er a reasons0 it makes kids more active0 kids have the opportunity of p!aying sports and compete in those sports0 it reinforces teamwork0 and there are chances to find young ta!ents. A!so this competition is important as the faci!ities keep "eing used.

As "eing a vo!unteer mem"er of Active Newham

had this "ig

opportunity of participating in an nternationa! :ajor event. The event was we!! organi#ed and the internationa! standard made it more impressive as there were some of the most famous ath!etes in the wor!d !ike :o <arah and -sain Bo!t. This event was rea!!y important to me for vo!unteer during that0 cou!d !earn a !ot as

was a"!e to see how the organi#ation is important

+)

U1251321

and how significant are a!! the vo!unteers even though our jo" seems to "e !ess important than what the officia!s do. Another great point a cou!d high!ight here is how impressive was the !ogistic of the event0 a!! the things outside the stadium were fantastic0 the ticket se!!ing was good0 the transportation possi"i!ities were exce!!ent "ecause for this event in the 9!ympic Stadium there were a underground station0 overground station0 "uses and even nationa! rai! which make this rea!!y accessi"!e. There were specia! p!aces for disa"!ed peop!e and peop!e with physica! impairments and a!so there were vo!unteers to he!p them0 and in my vision this makes the event even more inc!usive. Back in Bra#i! we do have many internationa! !eve! events !ike this0 the events most of the time are state !eve! or even !ess0 and there attendance norma!!y is not as "ig as here in %ondon0 comparing most of the events in Bra#i! with this one see that we sti!! have a !ack of

organi#ation when dea!ing with "ig events and we strugg!e with the faci!ities as we!!. So this time had a great opportunity and guess this

wi!! he!p to work in deve!oping sports events in my town as Sports :anagement is one of my focus and "eing a"!e to improve the sports events in my city.

Being a"!e to participate on the %ondon Street 3ames was a exce!!ent opportunity0 during this day was a"!e to see many different cou!d "e a"!e to watch were

activities and sports. Some of the sports

+,

U1251321

rea!!y new to me0 !ike "oxing. >uring the "oxing activity saw some young "oys fighting and that was rea!!y impressive "ecause they seemed to "e rea!!y we!! prepared however in the other hand during sports !ike hand"a!! and ta"!e tennis most of the kids seemed to show a !ack of experience with the sport. 9ther sports !ike "asket"a!! and foot"a!! were the most attended ones0 there were a!ways !ots of kids !ooking to p!ay those sports. <or this reason "e!ieve that activities !ike Street 3ames are rea!!y

important as the kids are a"!e to stay in touch with different sports than what is usua!. Another great point wou!d !ike to emphasi#e is that there were

not on!y kids from %ondon "ut kids from a !ot of difference p!aces in $ng!and. n my opinion this kind of interaction with kids from other

communities or other cities is rea!!y re!evant as the young ones have the chance of sharing experiences0 making new friends and having a !ot of fun. <ocusing on the faci!ities can say that the Cooper Box is a

ama#ing p!ace for the practice of physica! activities and sport "oth in the inside are and the outside area. The areas are a!! accessi"!e which is something rea!!y important0 and moreover it is good to know that this p!ace wi!! "e used as a significant part of the !egacy.

<irst of a!! doing this work was ama#ing for me persona!!y. !earned a !ot and tried to he!p as much as possi"!e. As see the situation of the

hand"a!! in Newham area is good and seems to get "etter for the future.

U1251321

/rograms !ike Active Newham are rea!!y significant in terms of !eisure0 sport and heath for this reason it is necessary that peop!e keep putting effort and vo!unteers keep he!ping in a way that we!fare cou!d "e provided. Being more specific in terms of hand"a!! "e!ieve that the process

is running in a good way "ut it is necessary to have more and more kids practicing this sport. >uring my time there was no gir!s practicing hand"a!! there which think is an issue "ecause we shou!d provide the sport "oth

for "oys and gir!s. think that the "oys who are practicing for more time shou!d "e cha!!enge more times and encouraged to deve!op their own sty!e of p!aying the game. $ven though the team is just "eginning to p!ay guess

their progress wi!! "e coming soon and they wi!! "e a"!e to p!ay in a good !eve! if they keep putting effort on practices. 5ust as a suggestion think that having more competitions or at

!east more games as we!! as watching some adu!t games wou!d "e very interesting for the deve!opment of the p!ayers.
