Basic Information Full Name: Morgan Goetz UC Email: goetzmt@mail.uc.edu College: College of Engineering and Applied Science Major: Electrical Engineering Title of Project: Discovery Lab Internship SATE/YATE Thematic Area: Research Expected Project Start Date: Expected Project End Date: Project Information 1. Provide a detailed abstract of your proposed honors experiential learning project. An internship at the Wright Patterson Air Force Base, Discovery Lab will be for one summer (if SATE) or one year (if YATE). The hours are every week day for 6-8 hours. This internship consists of working on a project in a small group of students that will ultimately benefit the air force, or improve the quality of life for society in general. Most projects are electrical engineering or computer science/engineering oriented and an application is required to be accepted into the program. The Discovery Lab is not far from where I live in Kettering, therefore, a place to stay would not be a problem. The only real expense would be that of commuting to work every day. To me this is a great internship because I know for sure that I will not be stuck with busy work. I will have full responsibility for my part of the project that I am assigned to. There are no excuses and those who so not work are kicked out of the program. I know this because I have interned at the Discovery Lab before. The internship itself is very rigorous and the expectations are very high. Those who do not give their very best effort are kicked out of the program. Many people who first enter the program dont have any knowledge at all of the programming, scripting, or building that they need to know. When they are assigned their project they are expected to learn the things they need to know on their own. One reason I find this internship uniquely rewarding is because there is a final presentation of the completed work at the end. Last summer, I presented my project to many people at Wright State. Many of which were very important people, so I was also able to establish many connections. I would really like to have the chance to do this again.

Clearly and thoroughly address how each of the following elements will be exhibited in your work: 2. Connection to Learning Outcomes within the Honors Thematic Area (identified above) From my prior experience at this internship I have already developed the ability to frame and develop a research project question or problem, disseminate research results gained, demonstrate awareness of key weaknesses/limitations of the research and provide guidance on the most important and fruitful directions for future research on the topic, to identify and apply appropriate methodologies to design research study, and collect and analyze data. The project I was originally assigned to when I interned there was deemed impossible. Therefore my boss gave me and my two partners the freedom to make our own project. This is where I developed the skill to develop a research question. I was also one of the students who didnt know anything about programming or electronic equipment. Thus I had research on my own a lot. I was able to create a working project with this knowledge and improve upon its programming based on the results it gave. At the end of the internship I presented to many people the importance of my project and what it could be used for. I documented all of my work and work a paper about it with my partner. I expanded upon the things that could be added to my project in this documentation. By doing this internship a second time, I believe I will develop these abilities further. I also believe that I will obtain a well-developed awareness of literature in the engineering field. I will most likely be put on a different project and therefore I will have to research new things (ie. Scripting, Java, etc.). I also believe that Ill gain the ability to

think beyond the just completed research and articulate how my world view has been impacted by the experience. Since many of the project are improving the quality of life and also saving lives, I should be able to see what the world needs and how I can improve it further through research and development.

3. Connection to Goals and Academic Theories (include reference list, as appropriate) A. Because I am an electrical engineer this internship is similar to my future career. Participating in an internship such as this will give me and even better feel for the engineering and computer science field. This experience also appeals to other businesses which they will consider when hiring new employees. Many students who take part in this internship immediately get hired into large name companies. While in this internship I hope to increase my knowledge on new technology and programming. I also hope to create something or expand on an already emerging technology to increase the quality of life.

B. To prepare for this internship I must create and submit a rigorous application to get into the internship. The Discovery Lab keeps a database of all of their research and programs on their website. When given a project I can read through the research that has already been made and figure out what else needs to be figured out and what I need to learn. Once this is done I need to research on my own about the subject and learn any programming languages and get any software needed for the project. The last thing I can do is talk to the other interns. Many of them have prior experience and they all know different things. Many of them are more than willing to help out.

4. Initiative, Independence, and/or Creativity From my prior experience at this internship I learned a new programming language called Python, I learned about a new piece of technology called a Raspberry Pi, Learned and used a lot of new software, and experienced what its like to have a deadline for a very important proj ect. Now that I have been through this internship once and also learning a lot for programming here at UC, doing it again will be less stressful but still challenging.

5. Reflection Everyday interns are required to submit edailys. This is a summary of what you have accomplished in the work day, what still needs to be done, and what you will do the next work day. Adding a component that reflects on this completed work to the edailys would not be a hard thing to do. Since we are to save the edailys, having them all at the end and incorporating them into a blog or diary would not be hard. The reflective portion can be on how the work Ive done will help others in life and in the workplace, and also how I help out the other interns on their projects.

6. Dissemination For every project documentation is required. This documentation includes a PowerPoint that could be used for any potential presentations on the project, a video that is used to quickly sum up what the project/creation/program does and is used for, and a research paper that explains in great detail everything about the project and the technology/programs in it. This paper explains many of the technical details. In addition there is a Readme, a poster, and wiki page made.

7. Project Advisor (list the persons name, title, and contact information)

Dr. Robert Williams is the person in charge of the program. Everything goes through him. When assigned a project a secondary leader is also assigned. This wont be known until assigned the project.

8. Budget (if applicable) The only budget that should be needed is money for commuting to work and also for a few supplies. Most supplies will be provided by the program however.
