DISTRIBUTIVE: The distributive property allows us to multiply values using a combination of multiplication and addition. For example, if multiplying 5 and 19, you can break up 19 into an addition problem, say (10 + 9). The resulting problem is 5 x (10+9). The distributive property also allows us to distribute the multiplication throughout the addition problem. Simply, we "distribute" the 5 to every number in the addition problem by way of multiplication. So, 5 x (10 + 9) = (5 x 10) + (5 x 9). ASSOCIATIVE PROPERTY OF ADDITION/ MULTIPLICATION: The associative property is the rule that refers to grouping. For addition the rule is a + ( b + c) = (a + b) + c. For multiplication the rule is a (b c) = (a b) c. COMMUTATIVE PROPERTY OF ADDITION/ MULTIPLICATION: Commutative property is the property that refers to moving stuff around. II. Say if you have the expression 4(7x - 3) + 2x and you want to simplify. The rst thing you would have to do is multiply 4x7x which is 28x - 4x3 which is 12, so now you have 28x - 12 + 2x. So now you have to add 28x and 2x which is 30x. So now the nal simplied equation is 30x - 12. III. Say if you have the problem 7x - 10 - 9x = -13. The rst thing you would do is you would box (highlight, circle, etc) 7x and -9x. Then you would add 9x to 7x which is 16x, and you new equation would be 16x - 10 = -13. Now you will add 10 to -13 and you would get -3, so now your equation is 16x = -3. Now you will divide 16 by -3 and you get 5.3. x = 5.3. IV. The rst thing you want to do if you have the equation 5x/6 + x/3 - 1/2 = 11/6 is you nd the lowest common denominator that goes into the denominators which is 6. Then you nd out how many times 6 goes into 6 which is once, then you do 1 x 5x which is 5x and so on till you get the equation, 5x + 2x - (-3) = 11. Then you want to add 2x by 5x which is 7x. So now you have 7 - (-3) = 11. Now you add -3 (3) to 11 which is 14. So now you have 7x = 14. Now you have to divide 14 by 7 which is 2, so x = 2. V. The rst thing you want to do if you have the equation 2 ! x/-5 is you want to put a one under neath the 2 so it is a fraction.Then you want to see how many times 1 goes into -5 which is 5 times so it would be 5 ! whatever -5 goes into -5 times x which is 1 so you would have 2 ! 1x. Now you divide 1 by 5 which is 5 so now to graph it, it would look like this, VI. The rst thing you do in a equation like this is make a line graph which we will be using later. If our equation is -4x + 4 " -8 we do the opposite of the sign so we subtract 4 from -8 which is -16. So now we have -4x " -16. Now we divide -4 by -16 which is 4 so now we have x " 4. Now we use our line graph and the answer looks like this,
