Part 1: NETS-S and Common Core Scenario

Grade/Subject NETS-S Standard Common Core Standard 3rd Grade Reading Standard 1 Creativity and Innovation Performance Indicator: a. apply existing knowledge to generate new ideas, products, or processes. 3.RIT.7 Use information gained from illustrations (e.g., maps, photographs) and the words in a text to demonstrate understanding of the text (e.g., where, when, why, and how key events occur).

Lesson Scenario As a class students will be asked to brainstorm different names of comics that they know and give a brief description. As a class we will read Charlottes Web. The instructor will ask various questions about the components of the book. The instructor will then list and define the components. The components are characters, dialogue, plot and setting. Character will be defined as person or persons depicted in the story. Dialogue will be defined as the conversation between two or more people. Plot will be defined as the main event of a story. The setting will be defined as the time and place the story is located. The instructor will gather students to show them the program Comic Creator. Afterwards students will individually create their own comic strip using the information they have learned. It must consist of characters, dialogue, plot, and setting. After they have made their comic strip we will print them and they can color them.

Part 2: NETS-S and Essential Standard Scenario

Lesson Scenario The instructor will teach the class about the different systems of the human body. Students will learn the human body has parts that help it seek and take in food when it feels hunger, by eating food; humans obtain energy and materials for body repair and growth. Students will learn the circulatory system is the system in our body made up of the heart and blood vessels that transport needed materials and eliminates waste. Your heart is a muscle about the size of your fist and is divided into a left side and right side called chambers. Each chamber has an atrium and a ventricle. The right side of the heart takes in blood from the body. The pulmonary vein is the only vein that carries oxygen rich blood. There are two types of blood vessels, the arteries which carry blood away from the heart and the veins which carry blood to

There are two parts to the nervous system: the central nervous system and the peripheral nervous system. The brain and the spinal cord make up the central nervous system. The peripheral nervous system delivers messages from the central nervous system to the rest of the body. Students will learn that in the respiratory system the lungs pull in oxygen through the nose, mouth, and throat. Then, in the lungs, the oxygen is transferred to the blood vessels and the lungs draw waste, carbon dioxide, out of the veins. Then you can exhale all the waste. Students will learn the skeletal system gives the body a supporting frame and protects the internal organs. It is attached to the muscular system, and they work together allowing the body to move. Students will learn the muscular system helps vital organs function. For students to apply to what they have learned in this lesson they will play an online activity called All Systems Go! Students will be able to recognize the different systems and place them in the appropriate place.
