November 7, 2011 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Media Contact: Ann Hartley, University Career Center, (785) 864-7674 LAWRENCE,

KS The University of Kansas is finding a new way to recognize students by introducing the Student Employee of the Year Award for the 2011-12 academic year. Ann Hartley, associate director of the University Career Center, proposed the idea after she heard of similar awards given to students within other Big 12 universities. Hartley wants the program to demonstrate to student employees how valuable and appreciated their work is to the KU community. Some individual departments already do it, Hartley said, but we wanted to start a campus wide program to recognize student employees. Departmental supervisors can submit their nominations online at KUCareerHawk.com/seoty. The deadline for nominations is 5 p.m. January 31, 2012. Only one nomination per student will be accepted. The award will honor degree-seeking students who are currently enrolled at KU. The student can be in an undergraduate or graduate program and must have been employed by the department for a minimum of four months and maintain a minimum GPA of 2.5. Graduate teaching assistants and graduate research assistants are not eligible to be nominated. Five finalists will be honored at a special ceremony at 3 p.m. April 11, 2012, in Woodruff Auditorium in the Kansas Union. The ceremony will feature Chancellor Bernadette GrayLittle, and the Student Employee of the Year will be announced. The winner and the four finalists will receive solid brass Jayhawks. The Student Employee of the Year will be awarded $500 and entered into the National Student Employee of the Year competition, which is sponsored by the National Student Employment Association, an organization of professionals who work closely with programs that hire student employees. All of the nominated students will receive a Jayhawk pin and certificate of recognition. Students who are nominated are also invited to join the finalists at the ceremony in April.

A committee has been composed with representatives from various departments to develop, plan, market and implement the new award on campus. Some of the departments include KU Libraries, KU Housing, KU Dining Services, University Career Center, Student Success Communications and the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences. The Student Employee of the Year committee will need KU staff and faculty to serve as nomination reviewers. Reviewers will read, evaluate and score nominations. Staff and faculty interested in becoming nomination reviewers need to submit their name and contact information to seoty@ku.edu by December 2, 2011. Any questions about the program can be emailed to seoty@ku.edu.
