Student Health Lesson Plan Audience: Elementary school students, preferably 2nd-3rd grade Objectives: 1.

Given different activities, students will separate into teams and complete the activities in a competition to the best of their abilities. 2. Given the need for exercise, students will complete a competition to keep them active and moving. Materials: 5 jump ropes, 2 long strands of string/yarn, 6 woolsacks, stopwatch Procedures: 1. The class should be split up into 6 equal teams. Depending on the class size, each team should have an average of 5 members. There will be a number of challenges throughout the competition that one member from each group will compete in. Each student should be able to compete in at least one activity. 2. The first activity would be the jump rope challenge. The students competing should all be given a jump rope. They need to clear out an area and make sure they have a distance of at least 8 feet between them and the nearest person. The teacher has the stopwatch and sets it for one minute. The student who completes the most jumps by the end of the minute wins that challenge. One point should be awarded to the team as a whole. 3. The next activity is a race. Two strands of string/yarn are needed for this activity. One piece should be used as a starting line and the other a finish line. The distance between each piece of string should be at least 10 yards apart. One member from each team will be asked to participate and they will run the race. They should begin when the teacher says, Go! The competitor who finishes first should be awarded a point for his/her team. 4. The next activity is a sack race. One member from each team will be given a woolsack. The racetrack used for the running race should be used for this activity. The students will climb into the sacks and jump along the track when the teacher says, Go! The first person to cross the finish line earns a point for his/her team. 5. The last activity is a short kickball game. This may need to be played during recess if there is not enough time built into the lesson time. Teams will be evenly combined, so each large team should consist of three smaller teams. Each student will be able to kick the ball once and run the bases. There is a pitcher that rolls the ball to the kicker. If the ball is caught or the ball touches the kicker, the kicker is out. Normally there are only three outs allowed in one inning, but in this case, there are unlimited outs because each student needs a chance to kick. The inning ends after the last person on the team has had a turn to kick. Then the teams switch and the other team has a turn to kick and run the bases. The team who earns the most points at the end of the

game wins the round. All teams participating in the winning team each earn a point for each specific team. Three teams should earn a point. 6. Once all the points are calculated, all the students on the winning team are able to choose either a free homework pass or an extra recess pass to use at their own disposal. Evaluation: At the end of the competition, the students will all be asked to list their favorite activity, why they liked it, and how it could be related to exercising and physical activity. The teacher is then able to mold the lesson based on the results.
