MISSION STATEMENT

Responsibilities as a Teacher:
Who is identified as an exceptional pupil? Students who have behavioral, communicational, intellectual, physical or multiple exceptionalities, may have educational needs that cannot be met through regular instructional and assessment practices. They may be formally identified by as exceptional by an IPRC and have their needs met through accommodations, or a modified educational program. What is a special education program? A Special Education program is a program based on and modified by continuous assessment and evaluation and includes a plan containing specific outcomes and an outline of educational services that meet the needs of the exceptional student. o The Renfrew County District School Board celebrates the unique contributions of each individual and cultivates an environment that values imagination and innovation. We guide and support our students as they consider the evolving opportunities of the 21st century and discover their own pathways to success

Our Door is Always Open: Rockwoods Resource Teacher is available to at any time to collaborate with Teachers and Educational Assistances, providing support or information regarding students with special needs.

Model inclusion & respect in the classroom Provide a safe & trusting environment for all students Welcome parents into the classroom & keep them regularly informed on their childs progress Invite students to share their culture or background with the class, celebrating their differences

Identification & Appropriate Action:
Identification of Special Needs Students: Consult with parents, school staff or professionals on the possibility of a student having special needs

Differentiated instruction can support inclusive education


Teachers should support the learning of all students through strategic assessment, thoughtful planning & targeted, flexible instruction. Children should have multiple opportunities for taking in information, making sense of ideas and expressing what they learn! Differentiated Instruction: One Size Doesnt Fit All! o o o o Group Projects Presentations Tests/Exams Buddies or Think-Pair-Share Partners o Case Studies etc.

Keep observational notes on students progress The student will be assessed, & an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) will be developed by an Identification, Placement and Review Committee (IPRC) Appropriate Action: Involve parents & other professionals in the development, implementation, monitoring & evaluation of IEP Document student progress & provide feedback to parents Update the IEP Provide teacher assistants with directions regarding roles & responsibilities for implementing programming
