Start of Class: Tell the students: We have talked a lot about facts and people and places in the Civil War. Today, I want you to think about all that you have learned and really try to imagine what it meant to be living through the Civil War. Introduction of Lesson: Think/Pair/Share for part one and again for part two. 1. Ask students how our recent wars have affected them. Do this in a think/pair/share style. -Do they have relatives or neighbors who have served? -How often do they think about war? -Does it affect what they see in the news, what they read, eat, or do during the day? 2. Ask students if any of the ways that they have been affected overlap with the ways that people were affected on the home front during the Civil War. Lesson Instruction: -Have students get with partners. -Tell them that one will write answers and the other will share with the class. -Pass out state scenario sheets. -Tell students to pay attention to WHO you have and WHERE they live.
