Next Meeting: TBD Upcoming Statewide Coalition Meeting: TBD In attendance at the Feb 24 SCIVN Statewide Coalition Meeting: Emmie Caplan, Denise Collins, Kimberly Feeney, Olivia Reburn, Patricia Leon, Julissa Mota, Aida Reyes MINUTES OF GENERAL DISCUSSION:

1. The group as a whole was interested in having localized meetings in addition to quarterly statewide meetings so participants wouldnt need to travel as far to participate. 2. Whether or not the Statewide Coalition decides to create a Facebook, the DV/SA group would like to communicate via Facebook (while continuing to send emails through the listserv). 3. Best Practices Manual: The group will continue moving forward with the best practices project. a. Task: Everyone was tasked with reading the best practices manual from the Tennessee Cultural Competency Resource Manual before the next Coalition meeting (April 13th). At the next meeting we will need volunteers to commit to revising a portion of the manual to fit our needs. We will then compile the revised sections and send to the group for editing. Kim Feeney has volunteered to do the final revision. 4. Interpreters: Based on some recent experiences with non-Spanish speaking LEP victims, the group thought it would be helpful to be proactive in finding interpreters for other languages to avoid scrambling at the last minute when the need presents itself. a. Task: Everyone was tasked to begin researching statistics (ie. Census, DSS, SCVAN, etc.) to see what other immigrant populations are growing in the state so we can be prepared should we encounter victims who speak those languages. Denise Collins volunteered to locate and send to the group a list of interpreters around the state that would be able to help us find an appropriate interpreter if and when the need arises. GENERAL MEETING MINUTES

February 24, 2011

Statewide Coalition of the SC Immigrant Victim Network

Tricia Ravenhorst and Adela Mendoza opened the meeting at 12:10pm, welcomed the Coalition members, and made introductions of key attendees. She explained the history and purpose of SCIVN and the purpose of the meeting and gave an overview of the schedule of the meeting. As a warm-up exercise, the attendees split into pairs to work on an interviewing exercise. Each participant was given ten minutes to interview their partner and each was provided with a series of three questions regarding the success or achievements of the coalition in the past year as well as possible improvements. Once the twenty minutes finished, the pairs merged into larger groups of six to eight members and each member introduced their partner to the larger group. When the groups finished their introductions, each group was asked to share what had been discussed at the table with everyone. Some topics that were brought up in the small group discussions included: quicker updates on the accomplishments and developments of the coalition, more group-to-group interaction, as well as the recent developments with human trafficking in South Carolina and what could be done in regards to U-Visas and T-Visas. A break commenced at 1:40 and the meeting reconvened at 1:50 with breakout group discussions. Each breakout group discussed their works plans and what their next steps should be before the next coalition meeting, as well as what has been accomplished. At 2:50, Tricia asked each group to share what they had discussed briefly for all the attendees. Within the last few minutes of the meeting, the coalition discussed the recent legislation of the South Carolina Senate regarding the SB 20 bill. Tammy Berherse provided further information on the bill and passed out postcards to raise awareness about the potential bills passing. The meeting adjourned at 3:05 pm.
