In 2011, I, in collaboration with multiple faculty, staff, and community partners, assisted in the inception of OSL, and since then, we have grown to develop a reputable status on

Campus in means of assisting students in reflecting, discovering, and exploring through course objectives which result in notable internships, professional and community development, and academic success. b. Speech Location: Chemistry Building i. I am very excited to welcome you today, as new Broncos, to one of our most beautiful lecture halls to c. Speech Purpose i. Inform you about the available courses in service-learning that are being offered during your very first semester at Western Michigan University. By the end of this presentation, my hope is that you will be excited, just as we are, to #jointheSLmovement! 2. Objective 1: To inform students about the roles and responsibilities of OSL on the campus of WMU Key Message 1: Explore, reflect, and discover in a new community (Kalamazoo is most likely a new environment yo these first year students and OSL is a good way to introduce them to the area nonprofit sector, Kalamazoo, and WMU as a whole) a. What is Service-Learning? Slide 2: What is SL? i. Engagement: Ask students for opinion on personal SL definition Slide 3: Picture ii. Following conversation, inform students on actual SL definition Slide 4: Our Definition Is 1. Service Learning is a mutually beneficial endeavor in which course learning objectives are met by addressing community-identified needs--putting academics into practice. b. What SL is Mistaken For Slide 5: The 4 Myths of SL i. The 4 Myths of SL (Note: depending on your audience (interest, attitude, and knowledge), you may need to give slight examples of each of the definitions; you know your organization best, so feel free to add examples to the terminology for the best benefit of your audience.) ii. Lets explore this definition in means of what Service-Learning is NOT, to give you a better understanding of our core at WMU. 1. Terminology Slide 6 a. Engage Students: Do you believe this is true or false? (Hand raise) i. Take Poll

b. FALSE: Slide 7: Academic SL is the same as student community service and co-curricular service-learning i. Academic service-learning is not the same as student community service or co-curricular service-learning. Both forms of service-learning, academic and cocurricular, make intentional efforts to engage students in planned and purposeful learning related to the service experiences; illustrated by student community service integrated into an academic course, utilizing serviceexperience as a course text for both academic and civic learning. ii. In short, OSL ensures SL productive and strategic learning evolved through tactile experience. 1. *This explanation can be altered per time constraints, if necessary. 2. Conceptualization Slide 8 a. Engage Students: Do you believe this is true or false? (hand raise) b. FALSE: Slide 9 - Academic SL is just a new name for internships i. While internships and academic SL involve students in the community, internships are not created around civic learning. and personally based on the work they have completed in the community. 1. *This explanation can be altered per time constraints, if necessary with exemplification. 4. Marginality Slide 12 a. Engage Students: Do you believe this is true or false? (hand raise) b. FALSE - Slide 13 SL is the addition of community service to a traditional course i. To realize learnings full potential, community experiences must be considered a context of, and integrated with, other planned learning strategies and resources in the course. ii. In short: OSL Courses are not made for those whom enjoy sitting in a classroom because we make the community your classroom. 1. *This explanation can be altered per time constraints, if necessary with exemplification. c.
