Identify topics-needs to be an organized body of knowledge Specify learning goals- after identifying the topic, decide what the students need to understand about the topic, content goals- clear about the relationships you want students to make, critical thinking- have students observe patterns, etc. Prepare data- data are typically organized in a matrix, prepare information students can analyze to meet goals, gathering data-students use this for understanding Specify questions-specify questions youll ask during the lesson, plan the questions in advance
Phase 1: Open ended phasedescribe, compare and search for patterns in the data and record information Phase 2:The causal phasebegins when students attempt to explain the similarities and differences they identified in phase one, explainable comparisons-guiding students to comparisons that can be explained Phase 3:Hypothetical phasequestions should be asked to get students to think deeper about the new material and apply it to new situations Phase 4:Closure and application-students generalize to form broad relationships
Assessment process in more demanding with this type of model since youre measuring their understanding of organized bodies of knowledge Assessing content outcomes-testing the students on the extensive knowledge that was taught Assessing critical thinking-can be asked to produce an answer rather than choosing a multiple choice answer
Each phase promotes student involvement as phase one also promotes success which is a way of motivation Phases two and three are challenging because they require the students to think deeper (critical thinking) about the topic and challenges is definitely a form of motivation Depending on the way you implement the lesson, students can be motivated by cooperation
This is very important to understand when addressing concepts that have relationships and a great way to share organized bodies of knowledge to students.
